Euskal Oiloa ( Basque Thread) - Page 68

I really like the mille fleur (sp) pattern on some of the birds.  Is anyone separating them out and breeding different colors.

How are the combs holding up this winter ??

I do too but haven't noticed any so far in my little flock.  I wonder if that gives me license to hatch out some more... 

I think Skyline may be working on those.    I think the Canadians are looking at getting the Gorria back first (might be less complicated to us relative newbies as there are a few Gorria hens in Sask and Alberta and we don't want to lose them), though we adore the millie ones too and have talked about that on the EO forum as another colour at some point.  The dark grey breasted roos are handsome too and everyone loves the way they look, but not the standard!!

I have some millied types in my older flock.  Some of the younger pullets like 5-12 weeks that are Milly-looking do solidify in colour around POL 16 -18 weeks, some of it seems to come back after their first year's molt.  That is what I have noticed with mine.

Mine are doing fine for combs so far, no nips. It;s been mild and only  as low as about -20*C, -7*F once this year but Sask got windchill of -50*C last night, but they heat their barns, we don't here.  The roos usually lose the tips and one roo lost all the teeth last year when it was -25C and he was in a too breezy area  (I realized after and felt trrible about) in an open barn outside, my one hen lost a bit of her tallest comb tooth at that.  First year ever we had an EO hen nipped and she's nearly 4.  Fertility never dropped on that roo at all!   

I think in a year or two we will have the base to most of the varieties of EOs if you guys in Canada are working on the Gorria and Marraduna. I would like to work on the Marraduna, Beltza, and Zilarra. Beltza will probably be the hardest for me though.

That is great to hear YH, I have no idea how you do that, but we have had some pretty dark birds up here. I love Belza chickens!  I have Black Penedesencas and Sumatras!  I have a feeling Llodiana may be a possibility at some point.  I think every Canadian hatched a "Blondie" like mine last year!  I have the lightest brown roo too from my Blondie. 

Oh and newsflash, we know how to pronounce  Euskal Oiloa!  It's on the EO forum under "Interview with a breeder of Euskal Oiloa Llodiana" there's a link to a radio show and you can hear it.  It's oo-skal oy-you-a all said quick like 5 syllables. 

I hatched out a Blondie too!

Cool!  They are pretty birds aren't they?  Maybe you'll get a light roo.  This was mine when she was just a whipper snapper nearly 4 years ago.  I think she was about 6-8 weeks there.  Scuze the photo quality.

Well.......To be honest I am not sure how I am gonna work on the Beltza. Still working on some ideas and researching. I think I will have the Zilara worked out in a year or 2 if I am correct. I think you guys have a great shot at the Llodiana.
