what to do after the chicks hatch

If you leave the chicks the with hen she will teach them everything they need to know. She will tend their needs and knows when to call them in and let them go out. They will be incorporated into flock with very little fuss.

If you take the chicks YOU beome the mother hen. You have to teach them what they need to know. You will have to continue to do so and provide for them until they are nearly 16 weeks old and big enough to defend themselves against the attacks that will come when incorporated into the flock. They will have to find their place int he pecking order. Some times it is a day or two of fuss and other times it is pretty messy.

I always feel it is best to leave chicks with the hen. It is less work all the ay around for everyone involved.

Oh I definately plan on leaving all the work up to the mother. So once they are all hatched it is ok for them to be in the pen if there are other chickens in there is my question? Of course there will be no free ranging for them or the mother! I usually leave the pen door open so that they can come and go when they want and their grain is also in the pen. I want to section off the pen with like halfway fence which means the other hens can fly over should they choose so that is what I was worried about.
Oh boy, this sure will be easier than me being the mother!

I am bumping this up, my question is will the mother hen protect her chicks from the other chickens should they fly over into their seperated pen?

It will be awhile before they can fly very high. How high is the fence? The momma hen will most likely not fly over after a chick and save it from another chicken. By the time they are 5 -6 weeks old her mothering instinct turns off.

If another cvhicken flies into their pen she will protect her babies.

Thanks Miss Prissy, the babies will not be able to fly over the fence but I know the nosy girls probably will so that was what I was wondering. I can't enclose it completely without putting up a way to get in so that is why I am putting just some chicken wire across the separate the pen itself and then I can fold it back when I they are on their own. I am dying to know if she is sitting on anything alive but I do not want to disturb her, so exciting!!!!!!!!!!
