*Post pictures of your duck pen/coop!!* :) - Page 3

We didn't use any plans for it, my husband just went at it! He started with a 3.5x3.5ft  pallet and laid down the floor. I screwed down some old shower backing the the floor for easy clean up. Than he built the frame, the front is 2.5ft tall and the back is 2ft tall. We used mostly left over wood from our barn and we had extra tin roof lying around as well. It's nice that it's built on the pallet because the water just drains right underneath it and doesn't puddle around the edges causing water rot.

I would have made it another foot longer(so it would be 4x8 instead of 4x7), I would have used 2x4 or 2x6 runners underneath instead of 2x10's(adds alot of extra weight), I would add a strip of  ventilation where the pretty holes are, I would add drip edge under the galvanized roofing or extend the roofing past the edge by about 2 inches, I would make the porch roof about 6 inches taller, and most importantly...not look at any more catalogs/websites/farm supply stores with ducks.....because then my house ends up being TOO SMALL. Overall, I would say I consider the duck house very secure unless there happens to be a hungry bear or humans around.

We only spent like $20 on the whole project because we used all scraps left over in our barn or we would've done a lot more things different. And the tin roof does hang off the edge about 2 inches to keep all water out. I think it's perfect just the way it is! And it is pretty darn heavy, gotta get the trailer and atv out to move it around.

I wish I would have spent only $20.

After building a full sized walk in coop for the chickens, I wanted something less imposing so I just did a short duck hut. I figure they're only in it during the night through the year, so no point in doing more.

I've got a grey stain/sealer to go over it and make it look aged and then will be trimming it in 2x4 material split either down the center or cut in strips, depending on where it'll be.

Very nice and your water actually looks clean... How the heck did you do that? 


I am so glad this thread was started as we just got ducks and have been moving them into the chicken coop for nights... They have a huge 1/2 acre fenced yard during the day, but no house yet.  Getting some good ideas.

Well, that's easy as pie. Just rinse off the waterer, fill it back up and put it in the pen. Poof.. Clean water.

I'd just changed their water a bit before the picture. Those two Pekin drain that whole waterer daily. Getting a new gravity fill dish waterer and 30 gallon drum for when I put them in their actual location.
