They Still Hatched And No Lockdown

Thread Starter

I have a homemade incubator, I put some eggs in, they went into lockdown about a week ago but here's the kicker, I didn't change anything.  I didn't change the temp nor did I change the humidty nothing, the only thing I did differently was not turn them.  I opened the incubator up about 2 times a day as if I was still turning them and they STILL hatched.  ALL 10 Eggs still hatched and I did nothing differently.... So it makes me wonder why we have lockdown???

I have heard the same thing about not opening the incubator during lock down. A Broody doesn't lock down. My hatches have been successful. I open up the incubator and take out the chicks as they hatch, along with their shells and the chicks go into the brooder to dry off.

I have always thought people on here get a little nutty about lockdown. I ocasionally open my incubator and take out chicks when there are a lot of them. I have also opened it to turn eggs in staggered hatches during the lockdown period.

I find out is about 6 days. Lockdown in 3. I'll leave everything the same and see. Just unplug the turner. smile.png

i've gotten a bit worried about lockdown myself. but all the time i must say, i've wondered the same thing. a hen doesn't lockdown and her humidity doesn't increase does it? hu.gif

Are you going to be doing the same thing? If a couple people are, we should start a thread for staggering hatches in the same bator, so even future people cant look back if they have questions, and if thing go terribly wrong (knock on wood they wont) at least i will be able to see what happened and make it a learning experience

well, my bator is so full, i had to take out the egg turner. i have 16 shipped silkie eggs, 12 shipped EE eggs, 7 local bantams and i THINK 36 barnyard mixes in there (local). so i can't have a staggered hatch this time. but i think it would be an EXCELLENT experiment to learn from! what i CAN do though is do nothing different at lockdown, just stop turning. that's another question i have had in the past though.....do the hens stop turning near the end?
