I would be interested in seeing or knowing where you read that. In all my research of the breed, I have not seen that.

There's even a color photo of the birds in question. The article doesn't actually say they were Craig's Lamonas, only that we was picking up the Doms to use in recreating Lamonas, White Dorkings and Rhode Island Whites, so I suppose he could have been passing them along.

interesting article...  i'm planning crossing colored or red dorkings with the silver grey to see if i can improve on size type and hatchability, with plans to breed back to the silver grey (and possibly other lines if need be).  also, to learn the genetics of those other colors as well. if they are as I believe, then they are all dominant mutations, so having a recessive like the white crop up might less worrisome.

I'm actually planning on separate breeding pens for sg/red/colored and a mix in the egg pen, just for curiosity sake.  from what I've been able to figure out, i think silver grey is dominant over the other 2 colors (but sex linked), and the colored is a dilute modifier, resulting in a lighter colored bird. so, is a silver grey a simple silver duckwing or possibly a silver duckwing that also carries dilute?

god i love jigsaw puzzles.  big_smile

Welcome to the Zoo!  2 Morgans, 2 Minis, 1 Standard Poodle, 3 cats, 3 pet birds and the chickens.

Dorkings and bantam Cochins mostly, with a few others here and there.

And of course, my wonderful Hubby, who puts up with me and keeps me in check when I start to get crazy.

Oh yes, that article I am aware of, and aware that Craig was looking at the recreation. I was not aware of the year that happened, therefore didn't put the two together. It actually makes sense though as Craig is a breeder of Dorkings, so I am thinking that is where those birds probably went in the long term.

Thanks for sharing the article (and jogging my memory!)

Jim, Do you remember when I asked you if you got your Lamonas from a gentleman in Illinois?  The gentleman in the Backyard Poultry magazine article is the man I was referring to, Stephen Gerdes.  He was invited to the Sublette Farmers Elevator Poutry Workshop in March of 2011 to talk about showing.  He told me afterward he was working on the Lamona but I didn't want to give his name out since it was a one-on-one conversation and I wasn't sure he would appreciate me giving the information to anyone.  He is obviously wanting the word out now.....I will be traveling to Little Rock in May if you want me to transport eggs...contact him and set it up.

I was the "breeder" at Crossroads his sons were talking with. Please pass my contact info on to him.

Our Lamona project FAILED!

The eggs mostly arrived scrambled and broken. The chuicks taht hatched were not strong enough to survive. The promised trio never arrived. Lots of excuses, but we currently have none.

Itw as enjoyable talking to the fellows at Crossroads. Glad I did, as per the article, they are making it public that they have recreated the Lamonas. I still wish to be a part of this breed.

This part "Gerdes isn't ready to share stock with anyone yet, or ever.  His experience with encouraging new flocks hasn't succeeded." is troubling.  I wish the old saying, "If first you don't succeed, try, try, again" would be put into play here.  There is a renewed interest for preserving the old breeds that wasn't around in the past 20-30 years.....maybe now is the time to try and get new breeders once again.  To let the hard work he has done be lost the way the original stock was lost would be a shame.

That is disappointing Jim.  I hope things work out for you and you get more eggs.

Hopefully a transport of eggs that is not through the mail will work out.

So sorry Jim.
