Sadly, we gave up a pair of Buckeyes and a pair of Buff Ducks today. We traded them for......

Buff Plymouth Rock Bantams: a male and 4 hens! Thankfully they can't see what is in the bantam coops!

We are still looking for that right piece of property. I like a 7 acre near town. She likes a one acre 12 mile out but 19 miles closer to her school.

I will be on/off BYC. If we owe you hatching eggs, please forward us the listing information. We are almost caught up on them and do not wish to miss anyone. Geese are now laying!

This is an exciting thread.   My eyes just about popped out of my head when I found it.    I was wondering if anyone had Lamonas a few years back and a moderator told me somebody was working on developing their flock, but the did not want to be identified.

I have been toying with the idea of recreating some, but haven't.  I do have a nice young WhiteXBarred rock cockeral right now. He looks like he will be a big one.  I have read some articles on the rocks (on BYC) and there does seem to be a difference between a heritage rock and a good show rock.  This person bought some (Ringlet) rocks that could be traced back close to a century (I hope my memory is working here),,,ago from a Shephard Farm?  Maybe I could just go find the thread and post a link.

I just changed the link.  This is the one I was looking for. smile

If we can get enough hatched to be called a flock, we will be setting every egg possible to build numbers. More numbers, easier to cull. Once our incubator is full, we would then offer hatching eggs to a select few. That is one reason I started this thread. To find those who are interested in Lamonas.

I am interested.  I am sure it would be a couple years yet, but that would be ok.   I have always thought the Lamona was a beautiful chicken.        But I am just a beginner in poultry dom.

I havent joined the APA or the Heritage club yet, but want to do that soon.

Troost poultry is just on the other side of the state for me.  Last time I checked on the computer, he had entered some Lamona bantams in some fairs. This was a couple years ago. If my memory is correct, I believe he recreated the bantam Lamona.

I sure would be interested in reading some of those old books/articles on Lamonas.

A few weeks ago we ordered some egg shipping foam from http://southernfarmhatchery.com/Egg-Shipping-Foam.php and had it delivered to the individual that is assisting us with the Lamona eggs. Talked to him today and I should be receiving the foam with about 4+ dozen lamoans eggs on Friday or Saturday. Will post when they arrive.

Meanwhile, our lone Lamona is ruling the brooder. It is doing fine. Can't tell if it is a he or she yet. Feathers are growing fast, but comb is still yellow. My wife thinks it is a male, I am not so sure.

thumbsup I hope all goes well. This man must have quite a large flock? What shade of brown are the eggs?

We have a ways to go on the Lamona egg color. Seems the flock owner introduced an outcross to increase fertility and production. He was less concerned with the egg color. We already are raising some White Leghorn males to outcross to for the egg color. It will take some time to get them back to the proper egg color. We will establish at least two breeding pens. One "pure" and one with a White Leghorn male.

I understand Troost lost his in a fire. He is searching for some of his old line to restart his Lamona Bantams.

The SOP calls for white eggs. However, Lamon always had some difficulty  in the egg color. it will be a challenge. Thankfully the type is good. We should be able to get the white egg color in a few generations.
