Dogs cyst burst...

To make a long story short, our 8ish year old dog has had a cyst on her shoulder for over a year. Took her to the vet and he confirmed that it was just a cyst and would cost 900 something to remove and it would probably just come back anyway, so we opted against surgery. 6 months later and the thing finally burst

all over my kitchen, couch, livingroom floor....yeah yuck! Anyways. I have been cleaning it with peroxide daily & letting it "breathe" and then bandage it up with gauze pads and neosporin. Do I need to do anything else? It has been leaking, but doesn't seem to be infected.

Other then that, there is not much you can do, just let it drain.
 
Not sure I would use Peroxide as that will keep it from healing... clean with Alcohol or the like...

Thanks everyone, I let it breathe at night while shes in the kennel so she wont bang it up or get it dirty and then dress it whle shes outside and around the hosue during the day. She also seems to like the cold hose water running on it.

I was going to ask about alcohol, but where it is a big open sore, I wanted to save her from some of the sting

Perhaps Bactine... I just know that Peroxide is great for the initial cleaning... but will continue to eat away at the skin...stopping it from healing.
 
Peroxide and alcohol are both good for cleaning initially, but both will inhibit healing. I would not clean it with anything but warm water and a clean cloth. Hot pack it twice a day to draw out anything that still needs to drain. If you feel the need to apply something to it to ward off infection, use bacitracin or neosporin ointment. Otherwise just let it be and keep doing the other things you are doing. Keep an eye on it and if it doesn't heal or starts to look infected then schedule a trip to the vet for more intensive treatment.
 
We had our dog's cyst removed. The vet could not get all of it without removing her tail...and I said we will drain it if it grows back, but we are not putting and old dog through a tail-ectomy.
He just had us pour honey all over it, cover it with gauze, wrap it-of course tails are easier to wrap than shoulders-
we used that elastic sticky tacky horse tape stuff. We had to change it several times a day. The gauze looked awful because of the drainage from the honey pull, but never smelled bad, nor did the wound get infected.
It took a long time to heal, because even though tails are easy to wrap, they are also easy to get to even with a cone.
but it healed from the sides in, it has not grown back and she still gets to wag her tail when she wants to.
