Hot Chickens !

I'm in CA too and my advice about wetting the ground is, it raises the humidity. Dry heat vs. moist heat. Some animals don't care for the high humidity and my chickens don't care for it. We have dry heat here and they have acclimated to that type of heat. If you were in FL, they would be used to the humidity and heat.
Just my idea about it all. Shade has been the best answer for my birds and if they are out and about, they do like to be under bushes who have moist soil but newly damp soil.
Anyhoo, keep those babies cool!

So I just moved my girls out to their nice new coop. They are 6 weeks old.

and it's hot today and so they are doing this open mouth thing..is that how they cool off like a dog?

Sorry I am watching them and freaking out I dont want to accidentally kill my girls off right out the gate.
I just feel bad for them being cooped up in the brooder ...we arent even using the darn heat lamp anymore.

I put cardboard over the run area so it's all in shade. and they are in my tall aspargas fronds.
Should I bring them back in or just let them get aclimated?

I covered the pop door with hardware and fencing so I can leave it open at night. I then added a fan that blows out the window pulling air through the coop. That has made a huge difference with Rusty, the fertilizer rabbit, who lives where it is hottest - above the chickens.

During the day my grown chickens free range. I am planning to let my chicks out to free range a few evenings until they are 3 months when I'll let them out every day. Hopefully they will start joining the hens in the coop.
