Robin's nesting "habits"

A robin chose my garage door runner for her nest; those babies fledged less than a week ago. Got up there to remove the nest yesterday (can hardly wait to be able to use my garage again!), and discovered four more eggs in the nest. Has anyone else experienced this? It obviously is the same momma robin, but I didn't know she'd lay eggs again so quickly. Now it will be mid-July before I can open the garage doors and go freely in and out of there.

Basically, I'm just curious, and can't find this type of information anywhere online. Thanks!

I didn't know robins did that either! I've really observed robin behavior since I was a youngster. They used to nest in the bush right in front of my porch when I was a kid, and I would watch the mama and babies until they left. Fascinating. A robin will build several nests until it is satisfied with the quality of the nest, and the location.

Your robin must really have felt secure with her nesting site, thanks to you! (I know, total bummer)......My mom had one build a nest in her front door wreath. She let them hatch one year, but the next year, she was tired of having poop on her front door, so she would remove the nest each time mama tried to build it.

How is the robin getting into your garage with the door being closed? Can you block her entry somehow? You are super kind to let her hatch these babies, but truthfully, I would probably take the nest down before mama could hatch them....I could never live without my garage.

I might just try moving the nest to a location very close to the original....Maybe she would still set on it.....It is a total myth that birds will not sit on a nest touched by human hands.....(Not sure about moving it though....)

Thanks for responding! It's an old stand-alone garage, and the regular "person" entry door doesn't close. Had planned to get that fixed this summer, but looks like I"m going to have to wait! But that's how she gets in and out.

Due to storm damage last fall, I no longer have any trees nearby, so there's no place for me to move the nest. And I just don't have the heart to kill four new babies. My neighbors think I'm nuts! She does allow me to go in there to get gardening supplies, and even lived through having the garage power-washed and painted while hatching the last clutch. Guess she's getting used to me. Getting the lawnmower out isn't terribly easy.

Trust me, the minute these new guys fledge, that nest's out of there! Making for an interesting summer, though.....

Depending on your location, a lot of birds will raise two broods per season. Increases the chances of species survival, I guess.

Robin's will nest numerous times each season,sometimes 6-7 times.They will nest up until about mid August.

I'm in Minnesota. Sure hope they're not thinking of going for three! No, they will not get that chance. I'm clearing out that nest the moment the last baby fledges.

Hopefully by next spring, the smaller entry door will be repaired and can be securely closed, so this won't happen again!

Six or seven times?!? That door is going to be repaired the minute these guys fledge! Twice is enough, thank you.

Sure would be nice to put the car in the garage for a change.....

Exactly what I plan to do. Remove the nest pronto after fledging, then fix the door immediately.

Hi I'm having same issue. Have a robin nest in my shed on a hung up child's toy lol. Only discovered it yesterday although thinking about it have seen the robin going in the shed all winter. There's small babies in there, problem is in movin in a month and really don't want to disturb them! How long are they supposed to stay in the nest?
