In other words, which small rabbit breed makes the best pet? Traits I'm looking for include gentleness, friendliness, laid-back personality (not easily startled, not hyper) but curious about things, and enjoying being around people. I understand that much of a rabbit's personality comes from its particular line and how it was raised, but are there some breeds that tend to be better pets than others?

Thank you very much! Pictures and comments on your rabbits would be lovely, as well. smile

netherland dwarf. They are know to be good friendly rabbits in general. There are a few bad ones in every breed though.

I love both the Netherlands and the mini holland lops.  Both are super cuddly and adorable.

what are the breeds of rabbits you can get at petsmart?  Or are they just standard rabbits?

post #7 of 13

You can do well with any of those breeds. The only breeds that are really known for temperment issues are the full arch types: Checkered Giants, Petites, Rhinelanders etc;

They aren't like dogs - there is no golden retriever of the rabbit world. It's going to come down to what you want to groom and what you like to look at. Good luck!

Not to dis petsmart, but  you can get much better quality rabbits from a breeder at half the price or less. I sell some of my rabbits to a local pet shop, the mixes i get $5 for and they turn around and sell for around $20. The purebred mini rex and mini lops (with pedigrees) I get $10 and they sell for $30. My Siamese satin's I sell for $15 off craigslist, they requested a few from this litter, so we will see what they sell them for. The bunnies at Petland in a bigger city near where I live are $30-$40, and they are just "mini-lops"

My suggestion is check your local craigslist, look for rabbit shows at the local fairs and you will find a better and cheaper bunny then going with a pet store.
