Newly hatched chick has bloody bottom

styptic powder causes the blood vessels to contract, and is used in dogs and cats when nails/claws are trimmed to close. it stops the bleeding. you should be able to find it at walmart in the pet section (one brand is qwickstop, or something like that), or maybe by the shave creams/lotions/razors.

do you have a tractor supply company, a farm store of any sort? that would be where i would check for the other powder

Warm cloth to soften any hard pasties then apply a little vitamin E or aloe on it if you have it.
Navel problems if not actively bleeding are best cleaned with some betadine or iodine and left to dry.
Bum try to keep clean and moistened.
If its bum is still red or swollen prep H works for chickens too.

wait isnt duramycin a soluble powder for the chicks water only?

I've used it topically over the years for various things. I don' t think this is an "on-label" approved use, but it seems to work. It can't really hurt, as far as I know.

Her bum is doing much better and she's doing great! I washed with a warm wash cloth and applied some aloe. Thanks for all the tips!! Blessings, Judy

Hi,
I'm curious as to what you might think that would be? I have a chicken that hatched and has a small sack that looks almost like a distended bowel. I saw him poop a few minutes ago and he seemed to be able to go just fine... However, he/she is having trouble walking. It seems to be chirping and otherwise healthy. Any advice? I have another that looks like it is about to hatch and am not sure if I should leave them in the incubator together over the weekend when I am not in the school.

I just want to say you all are amazing folks! Every time I have a question its always answered and everyone is so polite. Thank you all for every bit of input.
