Weird or Old Home Remedies

What a hoot - just found this thread! My grandmother had a few interesting home remedies. 1) sassafras (root) tea to "purify the blood" 2) flour and honey poultice to "draw out" anything such as splinters or just "fix" or get rid of "boils" 3) a spoonful of whiskey and honey to "cut the ol' congestion"
-and on another note, she would prohibit us from whistling in the house at night as this "brought on bad luck". Heehee!
-miss her. She was a scream!

When my grandpa was little his mom would give him cow pie tea whenever he got a cold or the flu. He said that it would clear it right up I just took his word for it because there was no way that I was going to drink that crap.

I had lots of earaches as a child and my dad would always use the smoke in the ear thing. Had to be pipe tobacco, not cigarettes. I think the warmth helped more than anything.

Now that we've retired back to the country I grew up in, I've heard a new one. During a discussion of venomous snakes we had seen, she said that her dog would fight a snake and often get snake-bit on the head. She had always heard to treat snake bites with salt pork, so she would feed her dog salt pork or bacon and the next morning he'd be fine. That was a new one on me.

DH is on warfarin, a blood thinner, has been for almost 25 years, with his blood so thin,I have learned that coffee grounds is the best quick thing to stop bleeding.Just pack the wet grounds and the bleeding stops in a few seconds. also another name for black salve is Ichthammol Ointment. CVS and walgreens both carry it.

My red neck grand-dad used to say: If your chicken's dieing, at that moment, first thing you do: Suck his head and blow his *****

I've seen him do this multiple times when his birds got attacked by hawks, other roosters, fox, ect. and trust me it works

What?? How did he...

I have a picture of someone sucking on the comb or beak and then turning the chicken around and blowing a huge puff of air up their end
