Dog killed my chickens, I killed the dog

Please people that are thinking the OP or others take pleasure in killing a dog please remember this is the predators and pest section. I don't know how to fire a gun, but if it saved my pets or livestock i would run at it with a stick. She didn't know if it had an owner. She found out after calling authorities. And approaching an unknown animal is dumb. Dogs are strong and can go for the neck. For the record i love dogs. But i also love my chickens. Like said before, on its property its a pet, mine, a predator.

'predatory' Animals WILL , if in the right situation, KILL or maul children. I was not 2 years old and a dog with only small animal attacks, A family pet, tore my face up. If the animal had been put down for showing aggression towards other animals then that would not have happened and 21 years later I would not be left with scars on my face.

My entire five acres are fenced and cross fenced to keep dogs out and chickens and my dogs in. People have this thing about letting their dogs run loose around here. I have this thing against being bitten or having my animals harassed by someone elses dog that they love so much that they just cant see fencing him in because it would take away his freedom.

Other peoples dogs are always to be considered possible predators when running loose in my mind. This does not mean I will shoot them, but if they approach me or my animals aggressively they will not return. Waiting till the second offense is not an option The dog might not be a kid killer, but if you have kids how do you know it wont be either? Too much of a chance to take.

The OP did the right thing in removing a dangerous animal from her property by using whatever means were safest for her. I pray you never have to do such again as it is never a pleasant experience.

bless your heart!!!! I would have done the same thing, only i would have throwed the dog in a deep field somewheres instead of fooling with the animal control, here where we live if a dog kils any livestock of yours you have the right to kill it on the spot. why don't dog owners keep the dogs on a chain? live would be so much easier. i would make the owners of the dog replave your chickens or pay you back for them.

Good for you! This is as it should be. I shoot to kill any dog that is in my yard and attacking any of my livestock. I fully expect my neighbors to do the same if MY dog was in their yard or pastures. I will shoot my own dog if need be for killing any livestock on my farm. A dog that kills, (even just a chicken) can and likely will do it again. And that includes children. Dogs maim small and not so small children every day. It is a shame some folks value pets over children in this country way too often. It is never worth taking a chance on a dog that has killed anything at all, unless it was a rodent. That I am okay with. And to take it to the pound just so it can become someone else's problem, I think that is just wrong.

When I was a little over a year old I was attacked by a loose neighborhood dog. My mother asked the owner several times to keep his dog in the yard... I used to walk everywhere and I've lost count how many times I've been attacked by dogs, mostly Spaniels, who was not behind a fence where they should be. One dog went for me several times and the owner only fixed his fence when I told him I'm going to the Police. Then there was a couple of dog I who's owners I knew who attacked me. Dogs don't seem to like me. Or maybe, because I'm so thin I make them think of bones

Bottom line is, after been attacked by more than 30 dogs and having lost a much loved chicken myself to a dog and having seen a dog attack my then 3 year old son, who did nothing to provoke it, I think dog owners should realize that they have potentially dangerous animals and take responsibility for them.

Jan 3rd I was at work. I received a frantic hysterical phone call from my DD (15). She was so hysterical the only words I could understand was "dog" and "dead" I rushed home, thinking something had happened to our dog. It's only 4 mins away, thank god. She was pacing the front yard, my GSD Rayden at her side. My youngest daughter was standing inside the front door. We rent, so only a small portion of yard right behind the house is fenced. The bunny pen is a double-fenced play-yard with a sturdy 2X4 and plywood house. A neighbor's mastiff-?? mix dog had ripped the door off the sleeping house. By ripped, I mean there were teeth holes through the plywood (the hinges broke in half!) My youngest had seen the whole thing from her bedroom window - thank god my other daughter held her back from going outside to save her baby Patches! She had had Patches for 4 years; we've nursed him through a broken leg and he would sit for hours in Allie's lap while she read him a story.
I saw the dog across the street, so went and beat on the door. Guy's response? "That sucks" took the dog inside and shut the door. By then, I saw the cops arrive so walked back to my house.
Dog was running down the street within 5 mins of the cop telling him it would be shot on sight. Another neighbor had just gone home after coming down to see what had happened. I was on the phone to tell the officer that the dog was already loose and roaming again when "BANG"
The neighbor down the street shot the dog the second it crossed into his yard. He came over and told me "tell those little girls they don't have to worry about it anymore"

I've told other neighbor's whose dogs have disappeared (I always get accused lol) that if I did it, I wouldn't SSS, I would dump the dog on their front porch.

My dogs stay inside when I'm not home. I've even had to bar my doggie door because of neighbor's dogs jumping my fence and trying to come IN my house, attacking my dogs. That neighbor threatened to beat my ass while standing in my driveway talking to the cops. I told him that I would shoot him if I saw him on my property (seeing as he just threatened me in front of a cop)

Honestly, I don't worry a lot about my neighbors or what they think.

ANY DOG, whether or not it has killed small critters WILL bite given the right situation. If it has teeth it bites, plain and simple-some dogs just have great thresholds than others. About a bazillion dogs that have never gone after a small animal in their lives have bitten children. When people have animals, things can happen. I was bitten by a family friends dog when I was 7. i was not being supervised and went up to the dog and hugged it (something some dogs are freaked out by) and it torn into my face. 21 stitches and two rather large scars that are still very visible were the result.

Again, I don't think the OP was wrong to do what she did. However, if it were me I just don't think that I could shoot a dog or cat unless I felt there was no other option to protect my animals. I'm not even saying that I would not shoot a dog if I had to (although I live in town and couldn't here anyway).

people that cant keep their dogs on their own land should not own a dog. its not really the dogs fault but the owners. there is a guy that lives with my neighbors that keeps a bunch of hounds to run deer with. during hunting season i caught one of his dogs on my land and chained it up and called the number on the collar. he came down to pick up his dog and i told him then that hounds running on my land wouldn't be tolerated because of my chickens. i walked him around and showed him all the chickens and said that if i catch you dog near my pens i will kill your dogs. now that hunting season is over he is still running his hounds and they still go on my land. i have fired some warning shots at them so he would hear me shoot. i dont want to call the dog warden because of the neighbor. it is at the sss stage with this guy now.

To the OP--has the dog's owner reimbursed you yet? I really hope they do without having to go to court and I am so sorry for the loss of your chickens.
