Silkie-how do you tell male and female?

Quote:
My silkies are exactly the same age and I have the same problem. I hatched mine from an incubator though and so Im the only mama they know. I wish I could help but maybe someone will see this and help the both of us. Thanks for the post.

When it crows you no it's a male, when it lays an egg you no it's a female.
That's about how it goes with a silkie lol... Sometimes you can start to tell the sex at around 3 to 4 months but that isn't always how it goes! tricky buggars!!

Thanks! LOL

What age do they start to crow?

You can post in the "What breed or gender" forum with pics and will get some good guesses.

I have an agressive little punk who started getting big comb and wattles by 5 weeks, he started crowing this last weekend at 11.5 weeks. What was my littlest runt silkie started shooting up in size these last two weeks and I really started suspecting a boy. Then late last week he decided he wasn't going to be picked on anymore by the other boy. He's really put him in his place. He acts like a good boy and calls the girls over for treats and gives them up. He's also a darling and my second sweetest chicken. No crowing from him yet, he still peeps.

Yeah, I have three Silkies that are 18 weeks old now.

About two weeks ago one of mine started developing this bubbly bulge on top of his nose.

I knew right away he was a roo. The other two remained the same with no bulge.

Just this past week, the roo has started to bite the other females in an attempt to mate. (Yeah, he's got a long way to go.)

these both look like males i would have to sayy

lol

I suppose only time will tell with these guys!

I just assumed the larger one with the bubbly crest was a male and the other two (way smaller) were females.

He also tries to mate-bite the other two females.

Not sure if males will try to mate with other males (maybe the unmatured ones??).

Although I have to admit, their pathetic "teenage" crows are worth hearing

They just turned 16 weeks and on the dot, the crows started. I am waiting for their "sister" Lola to either lay an egg or join in the crow fest in the morning
