Yeah I would watch them because owls will eat a chicken and a duck

I have 6 happy black star hens Niecy, Nantee, Violet, Chickira, Alice, and Kayla. 2 buff orpington hens Goldie and Tweety, 3 barred rock hens named Salt, Pepper, and Rocky. 3 white rocks named Shirley, Gurdy, and Patsy. 2 speckled sussex named Freckles and Ruby. 2 new hampshire reds named Reba and Ginger. And Duke, my delaware rooster. And 2 brand new chicks who hatched on 6/12/12

Have lost guineas from trees by owls.  We don't raise white guineas any more due to the owls at night and hawks in day.  Pearled Guineas seem to blend into the surroundings better.old

Yes, they do. Most raptors are opportunistic feeders. They will take what they can get and also scavenge dead animals. As mentioned earlier, the great horned owls can eat things up to the size of skunks, so poultry and small pets are on the menu.

It took months for it to smell clear again. She said that was one owl that would be sleeping on the sofa for a while!
We have a ton of owls here, as long as my girls are locked up they can have at it!

Well I'm glad SOMETHING eats those things! roll

But yes, I'd imagine that while your chickens arn't out at night, there's a possibility that they can be snatched at dusk.

The Great Horned Owl will also kill and eat a full grown opossum. However, you (the OP) did not say how you know it to be a GHO? How do you know it wasn't a barrded or a Screech?

As to Barred Owls: I have never known them to kill and eat chickens and I had some living in the trees above my open run in the city with chickens on open roosts & the Barred Owls never bothered my chickens. So far, the GHO living near me now has not bothered my geese and they are out all night (probably plenty of easier prey) & I have only lost one Guinea off the roost (they roost high in the oak trees).

Yes it will.  Great Horned Owls are known to eat house cats. Be cautious.

Great horned owls will definitely kill ducks. I lost 3 last month and had 4 others maimed. It went through the netting on top of a dog kennel that I kept them in at night. Now putting a metal roof on so does not happen again. Good luck!
