Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Good Morning everyone!
I used to be an active member, known as "Cheeky Chick". it's been about 7 years since I've visited, and my old account isn't allowing me to reactivate.
I'm so glad to be back here, I've still got chickens, I also keep Honeybees, and my plethora of dogs, cats, and of course, my children.
The past 7 years have been rough, but I'm in a better place, (way better!!) and I'm looking forward to being active once again!

Bumping this thread...seems to be the most active and most recent for Southern NY. I joined byc several years ago inquiring about chickens but life got in the way. Hoping to make it happen this time around. I have friends with chickens and nothing compares to fresh eggs, nothing!! We live on Long Island and not much open land where we are. Suburban setting on 1/2-acre lot. Well-manicured landscaping, hoping to keep it that way. Also, a nice vegetable garden that I'm sure the ladies would love to get into!! I've been doing tons of reading lately, especially on this site. Diseases are a bit unsettling, hopefully few and far between. I have a 10'x10' concrete pad that was used for a shed. I plan on building the coop and run on it. I plan on having 4 hens so this should be sufficient. I know chickens love to dig, scratch and poop everywhere, so I plan on keeping them penned up. We like our yard the way it is and have small children that use it daily. Feasible? Since it will be concrete and not much opportunity for dirt baths or scratching, I was thinking some type of deep sand bedding mix may be best. I planned on putting a roof over the entire 10x10 area to help with rain. I'm not looking forward to building a coop with material costs today, it won't be cheap!! How are the costs to maintain chickens? Thoughts?
