Hi, Donna. Thanks for the welcome. I've actually posted in this thread before ... had some a few months back when I first got my birds. I have 4 Japanese Bantams (2 hens, 2 roosters) that were, more or less, "rescue birds" (I had been thinking about getting chicks "someday", and took these birds in during the hurricane in August. They ended up being mine when the original owners never claimed them.) Here are George, Tammy, Loretta & Conway:

This was right after I took them in before getting them a proper coop.

Town of Islip has no restrictions on chickens (hens or roosters). I am the third person in my immediate neighborhood to get chickens, so it's, apparently, a pretty popular thing in Bay Shore!

I'm hoping the BR's (whose names are to be determined -- but possibly Emily & Amy, the, er, Indigo Chicks lol ) will be a good mix with the JB's! I figure I'll keep them separated for a couple weeks until they get a bit bigger, then try putting them together and see how it goes.

Nice looking birds George.
I am ever amazed how you can mix the flocks up .....large/small....they should be just fine after the initial dust settles.:<)

It would be cool to meet you all, since we've become a "family".
I know that shows are so far away for most of us. It was only 120 miles for me. ONLY! Hah!
I know I have a great time meeting other chicken heads, and actually seeing and touching the supplies that we wonder about buying.
Plus, no shipping!
It is interesting seeing all the different breeds.
I got to sell some roosters, instead of having them eaten.
And my Clyde got best of breed in a very competitive class, Black Copper Marans.
His girl Bonnie got reserve of breed, and I will be in the Poultry Press! Big day for us!!

Congratulations, Roberta.
Beautiful bird;  so good to see you in the photo too.  I love that we are all getting to know each other more and more through these posts and their photos.

I went to my first ever show last month, when I was at the Old Bethpage Restoration Village's annual Long Island Fair.   There was a poultry shed with about two dozen chickens and a very knowledgeable poultry keeper there, taking care of them all.   The permanent farm in the adjoining fields had a big chicken tractor with their nice flock too.    So there was lots for me to see.  I didn't bring any chickens.  Just a camera, DH, and a wide-eyed grin.

Some of my Japanese (the same as George and Conway) had a favorite girlfriend. A guinea hen, 3-4 times the size of them. They ran her ragged all over the yard, up in the trees, thru the neighborhood....
She loved it, they got along fine. Hysterical watching them on top of her, trying to...umm...you know!
I have lots of mixed sizes. It bothers me when the really big boys pick on the little bantam hens, but they get along ok.

Congratulations Roberta!! hugs

Sounds like you had a blast.  I'd really like to check out one of the shows.  And I'm sure Mr. "You're On Your Own" will be right there with me.

(Right now, I'm listening to him vacuum.  Music to my ears.  Think I'll go back to sleep!! )

I put the little chickies out in the coop today.  The big girls are free-ranging.  There was a lot of grumbling when they saw the three little interlopers in "their space", and Gladys has been especially bossy this morning (poor Agatha).  But the babies are having a great time.  They seem perfectly acclimated to the cold this morning - no huddling.

We spent the day (the whole day) doing more work on the coop.  Here's the original coop:
http://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/uploads/105540_coop.jpg
and here's the finished product:

I hate the way it looks - may paint it so it hangs together more.  But there's plenty of room and ventilation.  I'm going to add a swing and ladder perches to the big area on the right side of the picture.  And Bobby's going to cut an access door in the plywood on the back right side. Oh yeah, and run electric out.  Then a sauna and big screen tv...gig

Oh, it's just beautiful.   When it's painted it will be stunning.    What color palette are you thinking?

Carolyn, I haven't forgotten about the fabric for your chairs, just been too busy doing other things.
Did you ever come up with anything?

Sounds like you had a great time. One of these days I have to go to a show. I'm just afraid of coming home with a carload of new additions...

This time, I SOLD 3 roosters. Came home with less birds than I brought.
Woo Hoo!

Suzanne, it looks great!  What a nice job you guys did. you've got that chicken math down pat. Plenty of room and lots of ventilation. You difinitely gave them lots more space. Makes me want to build a larger run. Gonna wait till spring to do it, though. Have to get the electricity done first. We're getting kind of cold here overnight, so it'll have to be soon.
