(Ask Donna or Heather)

Suzanne, while I adore Clara, I think she is more of a bear appetizer or mini-crudite than a deterrent. That coop is so well-built though I doubt even a grizzly could break into it, let alone a black bear. You have nothing to worry about.

Rabies shots are not in the stomach anymore. That is a tough decision, but I think the current treatment is not as bad as it used to be.

Roberta,
Some of the eggs you gave me have OE written
on them. Does that mean Olive Egger ? Cause
most eggs say ORP. Just curious.

The dog came face to face with the coon and was scratched. My wife sustained a rope burn (open flesh wound) from the dog leash. I shot and killed the coon and contacted the Dutchess county board of health. We had the coon tested and it was positive for rabies. The dog who was already vaccinated and got a booster shot and he did fine. The BOH told us in order to contract rabies you need "copious"  and he stressed copious, amounts of infected saliva in an open wound. He strongly suggested no shots for my wife. He also told us rabies doesn't survive long off of a body.  Thank God my wife did fine and no rabies. My suggestion to you is contact your local BOH and explain your circumstances. Our BOH strongly advised against the shots unless bitten by and infected or (unfound) animal. Keep your head about  you and I wouldn't worry myself sick.

I have to agree with Rich on this.

Hee hee, agreed. Could you at least make sure the insertion device isn't ice cold too?

Nothin' I like better than coming home after a 12 hour day to find all these posts on BYC!  I missed you guys all day...

Laura got a call today from the crazy cat lady.  Brutus is coming home on Wednesday!!  CCL took him to the vet today to have him "fixed" (sorry guys) and I'm going out to get him Wednesday evening.  Laura's got some FD training to do that night.  Soo excited to have the little guy here!

And in the latest news from the chicken front:  Lavinia continues to thrive.  I took out the screen separating her from the bigger chicks and she's fitting in just fine.  Here she is on the mini-perch:

And sporting her new wing feathers:

She's hanging with her favorite big sister, Blanche.

I've said it before, but I'll say it again.  She better turn out to be a she!

Today, I thought aboutf what you said.  Bobby's friend, who I really like, came over to use the table saw.  Bobby was showing him the coop and all the big fluffy butts were milling around.  I came out of the house and he turned to me and said, "Are you out of your f*(&^ing mind?"  I ignored it, and Bobby swears he was only kidding (the guy said he was "half-kidding"), but it hurt my feelings.  Like only crazy people would turn their backyards into mini-farms.

I love having the chickens out there, love the fresh eggs and the baby chicks.  And Bobby's gotten into it, too, so it's something we enjoy together.  He likes to pretend he doesn't care, but he checks on Lavinia and laughs at the antics of the big girls too.

*sigh*  I guess there will always be critics, whether you're young or old(er).
