Chicken delivery #1 is complete. 

 

Now that there's one less fluffy butt on the roosting bar, some of the younger girls were up there when I went to count beaks at lights out.  (I have to remember to subtract one or I'll be checking fenceposts.)  I'm hoping that when I get all 4 chickens rehomed, the remaining 10 will all use the roosting bar.  This morning Lavinia had a big plop of chicken poop on her back. 

 

I used my patchouli soap from vegansoapexchange.com.  I smell so nice!!

I've been unable to read this website for almost a week.

Last Sunday night, there I was minding my own business, getting ready for bed, when out of the blue, my gall bladder attacked me!!

DH drove me to S. Nassau Hosp. ER & I had two days of I.V. antibiotics & then surgery on Tues & again on Wed. ( removed the stones endoscopically then removed the gallbladder laparoscopically.) TMI? Sorry.

Oy.

I'm home now, safe and sound (?). My daughter drove down from Westchester today with her wife and toddler daughter and is cooking up a vat (!) of chicken soup in my kitchen right now.

The whole time that I was in the hospital, all I could think of was how to tell my husband who he should call to come and take my four chickens in case I died. I didn't want to scare him to death, but I didn't want to leave him clueless about what to do in case...

Anyway, it's over now and I survived.

It was lovely catching up on the week's worth of BYC postings on this thread.

I wish I was brave enough to bring home two day laborers from the local Home Depot parking lot. The veggie garden is still giving us tomatoes and squash, kale and beets, carrots and herbs, but the weeds have grown into a mass of messy overgrowth in three of the now empty beds.

And I do so love a neat garden. Sigh...
But the doc said no heavy work for 4 weeks.

One day at a time.

Carolyn, So glad you are ok! Make sure you take care of yourself. I was sore and achy for several weeks after my bout with a kidney stone. I had to rest and nap every day. Please take it slow and easy while you recover. Tina

Carolyn, please take it slow ,those incisions will take time to heal. I'm so glad you made it through the ordeal. You have to make sure your husband knows we are out here so we can help.if you want I can come next week and do a little work. If it makes you feel better I can stand in the Home Depot parking lot with a chicken hat on. Just let me know.

2 years ago I had a gall bladder attack. One minute I'm standing at the kitchen sink and the next I'm curled up on the floor in extreme pain.my husband finally came looking for me when the football game he was watching had a time-out. He drove me to South Side Hosp which felt like forever. Pulled into a parking spot and the pain miraculously went away. I made him drive me home since I wasn't going to take my chances on a ER doctor. 2 days later I was back having my gall bladde removed.

Carolyn, please take care of yourself.  Take time to heal!  So glad everything worked out okay.  Things like that are so scary.

 

I think we should all leave "in case of" letters to our loved ones with explanations about how to get to our BYC accounts so they can rehome our birds. Did I mention I used to be an estate lawyer?

 

Unfortunately for her, Roberta's number is in my cell phone and she's the only one Bobby knows...

I hear you! And it is SO comforting to read soft, kind words of healing.

I really had to laugh... Poor Roberta, not only a chicken fairy godmother, but also a chickenkeeper's fairy godmother. All I could think of to tell my husband Gene was," Just go to backyard chickens.com and find Stoopid."

The weeds will wait their turn. Or, I just had a thought: when the regular crew of lawn mower guys shows up on Thursday, I can just ask them to weed the veggie garden and I'll give them some cash to do it. They're as non- English speaking as any ole Home Depot guys. Pantomiming with them is an adventure. Tricky. And risky. " Please pull out all those vine weeds that are in those two shrubs" and then ten minutes later I was horrified to see three gorgeous clematis vines dragged off to the trash.

I've got one huge Tahitian Melon Squash still growing in the veggie garden. The one fruit that developed is about three feet long now and still dark green. It may grow another foot or so, but for sure is not ready for picking until it's the color of a ripe butternut squash.

I can get about thirteen meals out of one of them, so I'm glad that only one flower set fruit.

I gotta get me some Spanish for, "don't touch that plant!"

Ha,ha.

Tomorrow night marks the start of a whole new year for us members "of the tribe.". Wishing you all a Happy and a Healthy and a Sweet new year. At dinner tomorrow night, we'll dip our bread and some sliced apples in honey to underscore the thought.

It is exactly for this situation... phrases in spanish for hiring laborers.

Now I've got to look for it.... Crap! just went to the website I bought it from. Not there!

I think it was something like "Spanish for the workplace" or something like that....
