Here are some pics of my pullets today and the weird little blood spot where the comb and beak meet:

Are they pecking through the hardware cloth to get spilled food or treats?

No. I've seen no attempts to peck outside the run / coop. But that does seem a good explanation given the location of the blood. I don't recall seeing it when I opened the coop this morning. I only noticed it when I went out after breakfast to bring them fruit scraps from breakfast. The bright red was very noticeable then. So, maybe it's something they've done to themselves while in the run. Poking beaks through the wire makes the most sense -- and most of them are just starting to get their combs to grow....I don't know. I haven't seen them doing anything new.

TeamChaos has it right. I just wanted to say so because someone else may show up here and need an answer. All is well, no permanent damage done. tongue.png

I'm glad we got to the source of the matter. Best of luck to you and your flock!
