I am in Newtown and it seems like everyone here has chickens. House prices here have dropped drastically so you might be able to find something. Also most lots here are 2 or more acres.

Besides finding a "friendly" area, if you are renting, you will need to clear that with the landlord before signing the lease.  The more rural the area the better chance you will have at finding the right location.

Hey, anyone in southwest CT interested in some week-old hatchery chicks? They're a mixed batch from McMurray, all Marek's vaccinated and, all things considered, really healthy (got 37 in the mail, still have 37 today!). It looks like I've got some Sumatras, White-Laced Red Cornish, Dominiques, Silver Laced Cochins, EEs, and Black Langshans (plus a few others that I can't identify), though I can't be 100% certain about any of them. They're straight run.

Hello!  My wife and I live in Ashford.  Welcome to the forum.

I recently built a coop for our flock, and tonight we put the finishing touches on the chicken-run.  Its been a treat to see the progress and the birds like their additional space too.

Hopefully in the next couple weeks I can finish the trim work, door, and get everything painted.

Welcome Melissa! Not near you, but best of luck with your coop building. Chicks are definitely alot of fun. love.gif

Does anyone know where I can buy good ingredients to mix my own feed? I was thinking maybe Edge of The Woods in New Haven County ~ they have bins of grains in the back. idk hu.gif I haven't seen anyone mention local mills in CT tongue2.gif or is everyone getting pre-bagged pellets and crumbles from TSC, Agway, and local feed stores?

I feel like experimenting with seeds and whole grains that will sprout if they fall out of the feed tray. thumbsup.gif

Feel free to message me with your recommendation, in case I miss your posted reply. Thanks!

welcome-byc.gifMelissa!

We're on the opposite side of the state. My advise it to make the coop bigger than you think you need, with more nest boxes. I only have 4 chickens, but 2 are broody at the moment so both boxes are occupied. Neither will be moved either. Good luck!

I would also love to be feeding more whole foods rather than crumbles. I have searched on here a little and it is possible but very confusing. I don't know enough about ratios and got overwhelmed. I would love to hear how others are doing it?
