Hi Adenium! I know how you feel. I have no problem with roos myself, but until we (hubby & I) can afford a better place to live (out of this state!) I have no choice but to get hatching eggs to get the breeds I want.

Hi Dynahoe Dave! That's the main reason I got my chickens for, to eat the bugs that eat me. We have seen fox and coyote in our area but no problems at this point in time (I've had them for about a year).

Made a good score at the scrap yard today,  18 fence posts for $15.00.

Are you allowed to have roos in your area?

Hi, everyone.  I'm in central CT, too.  I've been haunting BYC for several months and am glad to see neighbors here!

I'm raising my first flock of 10: 2 each of Rhode Island Reds, Araucanas, and Ameraucanas, 3 Australorps and a Buff Orpington roo.  Dynahoe Dave got his first chickens from my sister and brother in law.  (Hey, Dave!)  I was going to free range mine when they're older, but now we've decided to make a permanent run and let them out only under supervision.  We wondered if the mild winter meant that more predators survived.

Thanks so much, mikedero and nuttychick -- it's a company in Ohio called The Little Cottage Company.  Their website is http://www.cottagekits.com.  I've just been there for the first time in several weeks and they have a bunch more coop styles now.  Not exactly for those building "on the cheap," but it was a good solution for me in a time crunch.

Should be ok to have a rooster here.  2 acre minimum lots, more spread out & rural than suburbs.  There are only 2 houses within 1000' of mine.
