Sad thing is I know who that is and they are not very Chicken experienced folks!! They ordered way too many chicks and new the neighbors would eventually have a fit. I guess something happened?

Hey Beth, good to see you here!hugs

Thats unfortunate for those people, maybe they were just in over their heads and decided just to cut down on their numbers a bit, hopefully no problems with the neighbors.

WoW!!!!!   No posts on CT in 4 days?

Are we too busy freezing to death to visit BYC?  I did find out that while the girls HATE snow, oddly enough they don't mind ice.
They won't walk in the snow but they will walk on ice------go figure!?!

We're too busy rigging heaters and digging snow!

We put in another heat lamp last night, so now it's 2 if we need them, although I rarely use them. I also put in a heated pet bowl!!! Best investment EVER (Other than my actual chickens, LOL)

Even though it has been -10 and I have had the urge to put a heater in the coop.(Even my wife has been asking if they will be OK) I have not. I have read many time on this forum from people in Alaska just as long as it is draft free,They are full, they have plenty of hay or pine shaving, they will be fine. I have a heated dog bowl like Chicken boy said "Best investment" cost me $23 it is 25watts so it uses nothing for electricity. it cost more for me to put the GFI and the IN-Use cover in. I have been putting vasaline on thier combs to help prevent frost bite. I have a thermometer in the coop and so far in the morning when I let them out it has been 30+. So they give off some serious heat. From what I have read is that humidity is the big enemy. So make sure your coop is well ventilated.

We are not heating our coop either. I did put the girls in the brooder in the garage for a couple nights when we hit negative numbers, but I'm not too worried at 10 degrees.  That's why I got cold-hardy breeds.

BIG NEWS!  We got our first egg today. The girls are 22 weeks and 2 days old. It was one of my Easter Eggers.    Although I'm not positive, I'm thinking it may have been Matilda, as she was poking around the area where I found it after I took it away.  Funny: my husband has always been rather "whatever" about the chickens... now he is practically handing out cigars at his office over the first egg news.

My daughter is registered for the Southern CT 4H Poultry show on April 2.   It will be at UCONN.  Even if you aren't involved with 4H, come out and cheer all the kids on!  We are going to take one of the Welsummers for show, one of the EE's for Production Class and a dozen Wellie eggs (everybody better be laying by that time!)

Anyone want to come shovel my driveway?
