How to disinfect chicken coop? - Page 2

If you spray one and then the other without waiting for the first to dry or rinsing in between, aren't they mixing? Will that cause a problem?

I use oxine ah. I'm very happy with it! I clean the coop/roosts once a week.

I see I posted prior. Oops. Anyway, I'm really happy with oxine. I bought my bottle last year and I'm almost due for another one.

Kind of needing some advice on this one myself. I don't have a seperate coop and run. My set up is an old tin garage with a dirt floor that I am turning into my coop. The front is open covered with hardware cloth so there is plenty of ventilation and light. What I was wondering is since I have a large area that is doubling as the coop and the run and don't have a place to keep them for an extended period of time while the coop dries for a long time or a strong cleaner wears off, how should I go about it when its time for the deep cleaning or in the event it needs to be disinfected due to a parasite? Is vinegar and water good enough or is there some other safe chemical I can use that would kill the harmful germs?

What is oxine? How do you use it? Where do you find it? thanks

Oxine is a very safe disinfectant that's said to be 200x's stronger then bleach. I put oxine in their drinking water to keep the bacteria out. It works great for that too! If they get sick, you can use a fogger and mist them.

I dilute the oxine with water in a spray bottle. I wash my eggs with it too, especially before passing the eggs onto other people.

Make sure you never activate it with the crystals. Dilute it in water as is. It's a great product! I had my bottle over a year and I use it frequently. I clean my shoes with it too.

You can only buy it online.

I want to try oxine but I admit I'm skeptical. If it works so well without the activator, why do they even offer an activator?

The activator creates a chemical gas that will poison the birds. It's like putting bleach with ammonia and breathing it in, very dangerous to the birds.

The activator makes it much stronger and if you do use it, it has to be completely dry with no vapors in the air. I like the product. I use 1/4 tsp in my 3 gallon waterer and I don't need to change the water daily. It keeps the bacteria out. I like washing my eggs with a diluted solution as well, which there are instructions for. Anyways, it's up to you and how you want to manage your flock. The oxine is not cheap, but worth it in my opinion.

Thanks for the info. I am planning to get some. It's just that the more I think about it the more I kept wondering about it. Typical for me, unfortunately. tongue.png

When you wash your eggs with this, you just spray a light mist over them right?
