At what age do chicks no longer need a heat lamp?

I would say that they may be alright if you took the lamp but 5 weeks is a bit young and it may be a good idea to let them have the heat for another week or even two. There are so many variables regarding local climate, brooder types and chicken breeds that it's hard to say to be perfectly honest. Usually, once they're fully feathered out, they are pretty tough. Someone posted earlier in this thread that chicks can handle 70 degrees by 6 weeks of age. I think that sounds about right.

I've raised chicks several times and I always tend to be a bit over protective but I've yet to lose a chick while raising them.

Hi! I was wondering if anyone knows whether or not 6 week old chicks could stay in a coop with a heat lamp on 31 degree F nights. I am so ready to get them out here and they're almost fully feathered. They'll be 6 weeks old on Friday the 5th. The heat lamp sits about 18 inches above the straw in a corner of the coop. Would that be sufficient or will it still be too cold?

We went ahead and bought a second heat lamp. It's 30 outside but I checked and their corner with both of the lamps is 58-61 and they huddle for sleep, but have no problem breaking up and roosting or eating/drinking, so I think they'll be okay! I made sure to block the window in the door to prevent a wind draft. I can't believe we are getting snow today.... wild! It'll be gone in two days.
