5 Month Old Rooster has RED Rash on his legs - What is that?

I have two 5 month old buff orpington roosters. Both seem very healthy, are eating well and have good weight. I purchased them along with three other buff orpingtons. They are from the same clutch. All are very healthy except for one thing I noticed within the past week on one of my roosters. He has what looks like a red rash going up and down both of his legs onto his feet. The other rooster does not have this. I read on one website that it could be a sign of excellent fertility. I do not let them free range. They are all kept enclosed (as we have too many hawks constantly flying overhead looking for a tasty chicken dinner). Their enclosure is all sand. The coop is cleaned regularly.

Does anyone have a clue of what this is?


P.S. He does not have mites or any bumps on his legs, only the red looking rash.

Phew, am I relieved. Thank you so much for responding. I've owned chickens for over 12 years and never saw this reddish rash on any other rooster I ever had (and I have 5 roosters right now). Elmer is really sweet and I wouldn't want anything to happen to him. All my chickens and roosters are my pets. Glad to hear it's normal.

Do you still have that website with that information? Today, I noticed the exact same thing with my buff orpington rooster. His feet were fire truck red and I almost had a heart attack when I saw it. I picked him up, brought him in the house and washed his feet. There was no temp on his feet. Feet were cool. After the washing, I looked for cuts and scrapes but nothing. And the fire truck red color was still on his feet. I was puzzled, so I did a search on BYC and it brought me to this post.
 
Is there any change with your rooster with the red rash on his legs? I just noticed that my 2 year old Wyandotte rooster has the red rash on the legs and feet, so stared searching also. My rooster looks healthy, red comb, active, though not mating, it seems to me. But his ladies have been a bit less available lately. Two hens just over being broody, and the rest are young, just 23 weeks, and he's not making any attempts. But neither is the young cockerel. The hormones don't seem to be flowing too heavily here at the moment. But if that rash is normal for roosters, that's good news.
 
mine our 5 1/2 months old and the same thing,,legs are bright red,, they are buffs ,,so its cool they ok right.
 
Heh, my Blue Copper Marans rooster has the red streaks on his legs right now too, is what brought me to this thread. At first I thought it must be mites but I guess not. He's a year old now and I never saw him with red streaks on his legs, he has blue legs. I have noted that he's been chasing my younger Black Copper rooster for the past month or so when I started noticing the streaks (and getting redder). I guess that would be a side effect from flowing hormones. At least he's chasing the other rooster around instead of me, I had a previous Ameraucana rooster that would lounge or dive at me and peck at my boots and stuff, I can't imagine if he were to ever get the red streaks.

Going to add my thanks for this ridiculously old thread haha. Noticed my roosters legs started having some good bits of red going up and down the leg and between toes. The only reason I didn't freak out was that he's over-all healthy, strong comb and just as feisty as ever, and none of my hens have the same thing going on. Thanks for all the responses who have assured us that it's normal! Any chance all those added hormones make the roosters more protective/defensive? While my rooster usually ignores me (if watches closely) and keeps his distance, lately he's been crowding me and trying to start crap. I've been having to put a barrier between us to keep him from jumping at my legs. Hoping it's just the added hormones and he's not just becoming a meanie. We've had a good year so far.. lol.
