Chapter 46
Late afternoon…
My contractions were worsening into painful waves of nausea. I didn't know how much longer I could lie on my side and bear this unbearable pain in my stomach, but I knew that I was getting foal out, somehow I knew; though blinded with pain, I was. The minutes crawled by, I was going mad, my sides were lathered in thick sweat, which mixed with the dust in my coat. I pawed the air with one of my fore hooves, as if it would relieve the pain! Suddenly, in the midst of my writhing, I heard a small yet persistent nicker - high pitched and weak - but it was my baby! I quickly glanced behind me, and saw a wet, dark foal lying in a heap behind me. With a knicker, I rolled to my feet and lovingly licked him clean, I was exhausted and my stomach felt like an overweighted bag, but my new love for this sweet colt overruled everything else.
A half hour later he was clean and dry, yet not standing, which I didn't expect so soon anyways. I lay down beside him to keep him warm, then I gazed at the beautiful evening sky, bright pink clouds were racing across the horizon, tinged with orange, and then violet. The forest was beginning to sound like night, crickets were chirping incessantly, the smell of the earth tinged my nostrils as I sighed happily and closed my eyes; oh so thankful for my new foal.
