Survival rate of baby chicks?

26 Cornish X chicks - one died at 5 weeks and another at 6 (but that one was doomed from the beginning with a deformed vent and, no doubt, other issues). The rest were all chipper, active and healthy when they went for processing at 10 weeks.

6 laying chicks - 1 week old and all very healthy.

And I'm a newbie to raising chicks.

Your dad must have shopped at my local feed store. The first time I bought chicks there, the employee told me not to get too attached because they would all just die. Haven't lost one.

My dad is mostly talking about chicks in China, and he thinks it's the same here.

We are first timers this year-6 red star day olds from TSC in April are laying 5 eggs a day now! A month later in May chicken math kicked in and we bought 10 day old pullets (4 EEs, 3 BOs & 3 black stars) on chick day at Southern states just in case anything happened to some of them....so now we have 17 chickens! Did you catch the chicken math there? 6 + 10 equals 17:D LOL Someone gave us a pet RIR roo that the kids carry around under their arm. Tuff is about a year old and was a little frustrated at first waiting for the girls to go up but he is a good guy watching out for his girls. One of the EEs seems to be turning out to be a roo but he or she hasn't crowed (nearing 16 weeks) probably laying low because of Tuff! Anyway our friends think we are crazy and my Dad could not believe that none of them died. We did follow the instructions pretty closely using a digital thermometer to monitor the temp. It is very cold here in the mountains even thru April & May. Now where can we get some silkies??? (Don't tell DH)

I have 32/35 right now, Lost 2 to smothering over night, after having them for about 5 days, seperated the slightly smaller ones to remedy. One who was already beat up from being with the slightly larger ones got pushed into the water while i was out and didn't get out (he also had terrible balance from day 1) :( I am down to 32 of 35, with one more not looking stellar (walks backwards half the time with it's head between it's legs, but doesnt seem like wry neck as it is straight and it can walk around normal at times) 91.4% is not the worst, and all losses could have been avoided, had i been more prudent, and separated the slightly smaller chicks, but where I got them, they were all together. Very sad learning experience, but now I know
