Animal control here in Sonoma County would be all over that woman. I had a problem here and they made the guy pay 3 times the worth of the birds and let me decide if the dogs (2 Basset hounds) were going to be put down or not. They strongly enforce the lease law here.

I'm so sorry for your loss of Red Wagon and that your charming goose is hurt.

I don't think you will be able to get your neighbor to chain up her dog because there is a new law in CA, restricting the amount of time dogs can be kept on a chain. It would be better to ask that the dog be kenneled in a heavy duty run, reinforced so that he cannot dig or jump out.

I agree that it should be the neighbor's responsibility to contain/control her dog. Since she sounds like she is not willing to do that, you might try putting a strand of electric rope around the outside of your fence or something to deter the dog.

I hope animal control does something to help your situation. AC here is very supportive of livestock producers. I've had two instances where clueless pet owners called AC on me because their dogs came onto my property (after the stock) and my dogs injured them. AC says that I should just shoot the wandering dogs.

Electric fence and my own dogs have been the best way I've found to protect my animals.

I am so sorry to hear of both your loss AND your physical pain - good grief. Alot to deal with. CapayvalleyChick is correct, there is a law that prevents dogs from being chained more than 3 hours any given day.

My neighbors have small dogs that can get under our shared back fence. They put about 3 feet of cement block barricade around the fence to keep their dogs from digging under. That has worked. If you are double-fenced and they are refusing to fortify their side, I'd consider pouring cement between the two fences to  create a barricade.

I'm not sure who handles the animal control in Modesto but I can look into it. Feel free to PM if you'd like.

Again, I am so sorry for your loss and the pain your girls must be going through. Horrible.

I sure hope they can catch it. Glad to hear that they are taking that stance. Before it's over, she may wish she had handled this a whole lot differently.
 

Hmmm, too bad they can't try to catch it in the middle of the night when dog is in its doghouse. During the day will be extremely difficult. Are they going to set a trap?
