I HATE snakes and need best advise on how to keep them away from coop

It's not like pure sulfur you buy from a chemical co. like skylighter or firefox. It's a much less pure garden use variety. The older black folk around the south (I know lots of folks here in NE TX that do) have used it for YEARS without ill effects to animals. I never knew of another way to keep snakes away growing up. Well, some folks try moth balls and claim it works but any of the old timers will tell you sulfur works the best. Lime works but can be dangerous around pets.
 
So which is it? Sulfer or Lime? Is the bark a native of Tenn. or all around the south?
