Incubators Anonymous - Page 217

It's been awhile since I have been a part of this group..but I think I can officially be a part of it now! LOL

Currently I have 3 incubators running, a 1588 Genesis Hova-Bator that has some Lavender Muscovy eggs that didn't hatch still in it, then two GQF Sportsmans, and another one that should be here tonight! ; ) I have one full of mostly Guinea eggs, and then I have the other full of chicken eggs from my birds. Most everything I'm hatching out is to sell. Then I should be getting another Sportsman tonight, my mother is bringing it home for me. Then Saturday I should be getting around 14 dozen eggs in the mail, mostly Guineas. Then I am also getting two peafowl eggs tonight when my mother comes home, a lady friend of mine is giving me all the eggs I want for free! How awesome is that? Then next week I should be getting Sebastapol, Embden, and Pomeranian eggs, along with White Mallards, Runners, and Cascades. Phew!! Then next week I should have around 2 dozen BCM eggs coming from Wynette. I am hatching those out for my friend that is giving me all the peafowl eggs. Here is a list of what I'm incubating from my birds:

Bantam Lavender Ameraucanas

Bantam Lavender Cochins

LF Black Orpingtons,

LF Lemon Cuckoo Orpington splits

LF Coronation and Light Sussex

B/B/S and White Bantam Orpingtons

Olive Eggers

Then my broody Splash Cochin hen is setting on 5 eggs, 4 splash and one lav Cochin. Then I have a broody bantam out at the barn that is on a pile of eggs. I will probably sell all of her babies as I'm trying to stay away from mixed chicks at the moment. I seem to get overrun with them if I ever let a hen hatch out babies and keep them! LOL Then I'm missing a couple of females guineas so they are either eaten, or are setting on nests. Hopefully the latter.

Out of all the eggs I'm hatching I will probably only keep all the Black Orps, and maybe some of the Lemons. Everybody else is to be sold. I already have several people lined up, I usually don't have any trouble selling the babies as soon as they hatch. Then at some point I need to get some Turkey eggs, I have at least one person that I told I would hatch out some poults for. Me a Hatch-A-Holic? I don't know the meaning of the word!

that's entirely up to you...

personally it would depend on breed. with rarer breeds, you might be more inclined to track lineage a lot more than something that's readily available...  then again, the chances of getting 3 breeders local to you with the same rare breed/color are probably even rarer...  the closest people i know raising silver grey dorkings are in GA or PA... so the eggs are likely to be shipped anyways.

then again, i'm also semi-anal about knowing which chicks are which, just for my own record-keeping.

Dorkings and bantam Cochins mostly, with a few others here and there.

And of course, my wonderful Hubby, who puts up with me and keeps me in check when I start to get crazy.

Oh, forgot to mention that if anyone would like some hatching eggs, please contact me as all my incubators will be full for a couple of weeks and I will not have room for anymore eggs. smile.png

I am with ki4got, I usually like to keep track of who my birds are from. Sometimes it can get confusing. But it all depends on why you have them. Most of the purebred chicks I hatch out will be marked, soI know who they are from. But I mean if you are hatching out mixed chicks or something I would say it wouldn't really matter.

Home to many horses, dogs, cats, 3 Cockatiels, and tons of Chickens, Pigs, and more!! we love our animals and our kids!! the Horses and Chickens are my passion along with my Min Pin, Bella! My kids are my most cherished loves of all, however!! I enjoy introducing them to the many experiences that the animals provide for them - it also teaches them about life and responsibility!!

great idea!! i thought of that and marked the eggs, but now am questioning myself.... i should be able to tell the buff orpingtons from the black stars from the first hatch, but now...barnie.gif maybe that was a big oopsie....

Well, I'll be getting a mix of brown and green mutt eggs and silkies, OEG, and modern games from one source, a mix of Americana’s, Rhode Island Reds, Silkie’s and Buff Orpinton crosses from another, a mix of blue splash marans, americana, white leg horns, dark cornish, Java, Speckled Sussex, Phoenix, Japanese bantams, black stars, new Hampshire, and cinnamon queen from a third, and my original dozen shipped eggs are a mystery box that could potentially have Black Australorps, Assorted Orpingtons  (Buff, Black or Lavender), Easter Egger  (Ameraucana roosters over Easter Egger hens), Assorted Marans, Rhode Island Red, Barred Plymouth Rock, Barnevelder, Ameraucana (Blue, Black, Splash), and Assorted Bantams:  (Mille Fleur D'Uccle, Silkies)

So I don't think I have anything particularlly rare (though I may be wrong) and I'm not too concerned.

well i'm not so worried when they're all the same breed/color/source, but when i have multiple colors from the same breed it can get confusing since colored can look like either silver grey or red at first. i had 1 silver grey hatch from this last bunch, and she got a band soon as she went in the brooder, because a silver grey roo over colored hen, all the pullets will be silver grey, and i want to know for sure pure vs mix. yes they're pure dorking, but they're not pure color except the 1 girl. i was fortunate that she waited till last to hatch, i'd already removed all the color cross chicks.
