Sometimes it's not easy outsmarting a chicken! Glad you found them. I'm still looking for my Dominiques new "hidey hole".
 

well, one guinea decided to be the 'early bird' hatching 2 days early. my cochins on the other hand, are taking their sweet time. one's pipped so far.

Air sac question.... please please.... We think we may have at least two movers (and shakers!) in our wee batch of barnyard chickies and after the baking we (my darling sweet kind hubby) gave them last weekend that's a miracle.

Sooooo, the question: One of them has about a day 7 air sac and we're on day 13. Suggestions? Humidity is very very very low.... we're doing the dry hatch thing and not worrying about it on purpose and so far so good, except for the air sac. Hmmmmm. Have both vents out, good circulation in the room, and temp is very steady and appropriate. Bator is a dinosaur.... hovabator 1586 I think.... and we're new.

There I've said it all. Now off to a short evening, and will check back when I get home. Will post this on another thread with great advice!!

We are glad to help.

How many eggs are in? Are the other eggs looking like a day 7 or all of the eggs.  If it is only one egg, you may need to sacirfice the one to keep the others on track, however if it is all the eggs, you may need to take further action. 

Some pictures are an exaggeration of the result you are looking for.  Look at the post with the 2 diagrams; I use the bottom diagram. I think the top diagrams shows too much moisture loss.

Remove any and all water from the incubator. I mention this because some people do have water in it and call it dry incubating.

You can possibly increase the ventilation if the incubator allows ( your model is not one I have used) a larger opening and will increase the heat out put to compensate.

Silica gel packs from pill bottles.

Blow a fan across the incubator and monitor the effect on the temperature.

THee are the few things I know. I'm  sure there are more ideas to come.

honestly i wouldn't change anything. you'd be surprised how well they can catch up with others as they start hatching.

If the other are ok.... wait and see.  I did have one that had a blood ring and I don't toss till day 14.  When I candled them it had a little wiggler at day 14.... I did toss that egg..... WAY to far behind.  Mark it and watch.  If the others are doing I wouldn't change anything either.

anyone ever introduced new chicks to a broody who's chicks are 3-4 days old?

 well, i'm still trying. i got 1 egg from the 'new' spot, and found 3 more in the middle of the raspberry/brush pile. but also found an old egg i'd tossed (and thought i'd broken them all) so maybe they just thought someone else had a good idea... 

love the berries, hate the thorns.

Last weekend at the trade day, I guy that got eggs from me brought the chicks so I could help ID then and he left 2 that were roos and took 2 new ones home and she accepted them just fine.  they were several days old too... maybe a week.

Donna,  I have 9 OE so far: 4 black and 5 blues.   And 3 pips on the Cuckoo Marans.    I spent the night dreaming of who to breed the OE back to, a FBCM or a blue Ameracana.
