Pine shavings in water - Page 3

post #21 of 39

I just switched to the 5 gallon bucket with nipples at 4 weeks old and all 14 chicks caught on overnight. No more shavings or poop in the water.

I keep my chick waterers as high as I can with the chicks still being able to reach them... Mine are typically situated on top of an overturned dog watering bowl... I also keep my chicks in the bathroom and dump the water in the rim of the waterer down the toilet as soon as I notice any waste in it.  This keeps it pretty clean.  By about four or five weeks I move the chickpea put to the shed and use a bigger waterer and put it a little higher on some two by four scraps.  I also have a setup similar for my aunt chickens.  The waterer is on a stack of scrap two by fours and about ten inches off the ground.  The chickens have to stand up tall for the water but they don't seem bothered at all.

Sent from my iPod.

@azygous
Love the setup!  Does the netting interfere with screwing on the base?

You cut the netting off that is above the screw threads, and so it doesn't get in the water.

For some reason, even if you raise the waterer, shaving will always get in the water.  It is a pain but there's nothing you can really do except clean it everyday.

Thanks for the idea on the bricks.  I have 4 chickies in a tote, and the shavings were irritating me.  Also, I don't want the chickies stomping in the water.  Last night I brought them home and set up the temporary brooder.  They kept stomping in the water.  roll

Chickens are not terribly smart I think.

The shaving in the water, doesn't bother me as much as when they get big enough to turn the whole dang water over. I've had a few chicks that liked to sit on top of the waterer, and they still do a full grown chickens! It's not a big deal out in the run, but it makes a mess in the brooder.
