Today my husband and I were moving the tractor with the guineas in it and one of them got caught under the edge of the tractor. She definitely broke her thigh (drumstick) bone. I could feel the break and the leg was just flopping so there is no doubt it is broke. We put a popsicle stick on it and wrapped it with vet wrap to try and stabilize the break. She was so tolerate although I'm sure she was scared, she never struggled or anything while we were putting on the splint. And when we put her back down she stayed rather close to us for a minute or so just looking at us, almost as if she knew we were trying to help her. We feel horrible that this happened. We are not against putting her down if she is suffering too much but we want to give her a chance to recover if possible. Has anyone ever had a guinea with a broke thigh that healed and could live a normal life? She is 14 weeks old if that matters.

I have one with a broken leg. she limps around and still lays eggs. I call her the gimp.
give her some time and maybe a little tlc. try to keep her away from the other birds. they will pick on her.
also pouring some pedialyte down her throat will help her keep hydrated. my problem was in 100 degree weather, so I did it twice a day.
it will take a couple weeks until the bird walks with both legs.

I am so sorry this happened to your guinea and you all. It needs to be isolated in a quiet place for awhile. I know there is medicine you can give for pain I think baby asprin.(If I am wrong please correct me) And lots of electrolytes. It does not need to be running around as I am sure you already know. Please keep us informed of its progress. If it is possible for you it should go to the vet. I know alot of people can not do this. I understand. Good luck and I hope it makes a full recovery.

My broke legged guinea survived the night. When I checked her leg today, I fully expected the bandage to be ripped off and/or falling off but it was still secure. The lower leg was pretty swollen but I guess that's to be expected since it is broken and the leg naturally hangs down all the time. She seems to be eating and drinking pretty normal so we'll see how tomorrow goes. Please keep your fingers crossed and the prayers coming for her. Thanks!

So far my guinea with the broke leg is doing fine. We've named him Hoppie since he hops on one leg now. lol We caught him up this morning and the leg is still a little bit swollen but other wise seems to be doing good. I''m thinking I will probably re-do the bandage this Sunday.
Glad he's doing ok, hopefully he heals up and can use the leg again. Might always have a limp tho. I had a Royal Purple Hen that was named Hoppy... she got her leg slammed in the run door when my billy goat decided to head butt the gate. She healed, ran around with the rest of the free rangers just fine but always gimped around... until a bobcat took her while she was sneaking off into the bushes up the hill to go lay an egg in a nest I couldn't find

he was an outcast of the guinea group
stayed with the chickens all day
dont no how he hurt his leg
but it healed up and he was fine
just gimped around hence the name gimpy lol

Good News! We took the splint off this past Sunday which was two weeks since the accident and today he has started putting it on the ground and "limping" on it. I'm so excited that he's beginning to use it. I'm really glad we gave him a chance to recover. Thanks!
