Owning a goat?

Goats also need to have their hooves trimmed regularly and you need to train them to do so. They need to be dewormed regularly and need certain vaccinations. They also need shelter from the weather.

I agree with not tying them in a brushy area. Heaven's, you'd be out there constantly untangling them! Otherwise if you had a fence it sounds like your area is perfect for them, just the kind of stuff they love to eat. And then your fence has to be goat proof as they are very good escape artists as has been mentioned! They'll climb on it to try to reach yummy stuff, scratch themselves on it, you name it. Very hard on fences. I use hot wire to not only help keep predators out but inside as well to keep the darn goats off the fence.

I always tell people you should really love goats if your going to own them because they can be such a PITA!

We have had goats (pygmies) for about 10 years only a few at a time, and they are like children. They do not require anymore work than any other animal. You can tether them but I would be wary of predators, we have lost goats to stray dogs. You should have more than one because they will get lonely and stress. They WILL escape your enclosure but if you are around them and they are not like wild animals then they will not run off. Goats tend to go to the closest bush or tree branch to forage. When ours escape I simply walk towards them talking as if to any other pet and they come to me. I insist they return to their pen and it is quite funny to watch them run to the gate to get back in. The best part is if you wait and watch for a few minutes they will go right to where they escaped from and you will know where to mend the fence. Anything else you want ask I will help anyway I can.

I really appreciate all the replies, and am thankful for the BYC community. After what I've learned here, I think it's obvious that now is not the right time for us to get goats, but something we'll do in the future when we're better prepared to provide an adequate environment for them. Too many people jump in to animal ownership without research. I'm glad you all are here so I can do mine....

Good luck. I wish I had known about BYC and BYH before I got goats and chickens. We were not prepared at all. After alot of frantic building of houses, feeders, fences and such we learned the hard way. We want more chickens but do not have any place to put them right now. So it will have to wait. You will know when the time is right and you will obviously do a great job at taking care of them and loving them.
