Diatomaceous earth - Page 3

I don't even know if this info is accurate, but supposedly, rather than dehydrating parasites inside the body, this is how it works (from Earthworks Health):

It looks like a cylinder full of holes.  This cylinder has a very strong negative charge. As these millions of cylinders move through the stomach and digestive tract, they attract and absorb fungi, protozoa, viruses, endotoxins, pesticides and drug residues, E-Coli, and heavy metals. These are trapped inside the cylinder and passed out of the body. In addition, any larger parasites that happen to be in the stomach or digestive tract are "cut up" and killed by the sharp edges of the Diatomaceous Earth.

I know "if it's accurate"

It's not

Earthworks just wants you to buy it

Anything with a "negative charge" will lose it the INSTANT it touches anything else.

DE kills by dehydration, and does NOT work at all when wet

Don't fall for sales hype that defies the laws of physics

This is what they say:

Quote:

Because of FDA control & oversight of labeling, many wonderful natural, herbal or organic supplements will seldom if ever claim to be treatments or remedies for specific maladies. This is also true of Food Grade DE.

That means they can't SAY it if they can't PROVE it

Quote:
All that we can say is that many consumers rely on Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth for what they
experience as better health,

That means some THINK it helps them, when in fact it doesn't

Quote:
Of course, most actual in depth health related studies are initiated and controlled by the pharmaceutical industry, and why should those companies study the value of health remedies found in nature that could actually hurt their bottom line?

This means "Don't believe SCIENCE, just believe what we tell you"

Quote:

it is not allowed by government regulators for distributers to make claims about DE's use as a human health supplement,

Again, they can't say it, because they cannot PROVE it

Quote:

This brings us to one of the most exciting trends that we have witnessed here at Earthworks Health: Increasing use of Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth for human health benefits.

They are excited because people keep believing the sales pitch, and they make money selliing you powdered rock

I had always understood that DE lysed (cut open) the guts of whatever bug critter ingested it.

It doesn't work that way

If it did it would kill earthworms, and one poster has stated it doesn't:

Quote:

I can vouch that it doen't kill earthworms (nightcrawlers)! They were all over the area where I put it outside the coop area!

My youngest daughter has worked for Southern States for many years. For those of you that aren't familiar with SS, it's a farm supply store something like Tractor Supply. SS is owned by the farmers who use it and has been in business since 1923 and has stores in many surrounding states in my area. One of the differences between to two stores is that SS mixes feed for farmers and sells feed to them in bulk. SS sells Diatomaceous Earth by the bag and mixes it with different feeds at the farmers request and according to my daughter SS sells tons of it. A lot of the farmers in my area are believers in DE.

Last summer my daughter's 14 years old daughter (my granddaughter) spent the night with a friend of hers and brought home a few bedbugs. It was a good while (several weeks) before they knew about it and by that time the bedbugs had multiplied and were through out their home. SS sells many different insecticides & pesticides and my daughter tried to come up with one that would kill bedbugs. After a bit of research she decided to use Diatomaceous Earth to combat the problem.

They dusted their entire home (carpet, furniture, mattresses, etc.) with DE and let it set for four weeks to kill the new ones that hatched out. After the four weeks of waiting they couldn't find a live bedbug anywhere but they did find a lot of dead ones. Then they cleaned up the DE dust and haven't had a problem since. So I know DE does kill some critters.

What i am saying is...use your best judgment. If you are going to spend most the day in a cloud of dust then maybe a mask would be best. if you are going to spend 5 min spreading it around then myself i would not use one.

This is quite true. Warning labels on everything. Unfortunately, the bizarre legislation created in this Nanny State eventually makes its way to the Free States. You have my sincerest apologies.

Our legislators seem to think there needs to be a law about everything and people are too stupid to have any common sense.

Scientific studies have been carried out on the effectiveness of DE in chickens, so I don't believe it is simply a ploy by companies to make people buy it: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21673156

You have to love people that take the time to find references.  Thank you for your effort.

This study is often used to "prove" DE affects parasites.

It turns up in almost all the DE threads, and has been refuted in most of them

Read it carefully, and you will see it is NOT conclusive at all:

Quote:

Supplementing DE in diets of LB hens, the more parasite-resistant breed, did not significantly affect their FEC and adult parasite load

Quote:

However, BB hens treated with dietary DE had significantly lower Capillaria FEC, slightly lower Eimeria FEC, fewer birds infected with Heterakis, and significantly lower Heterakis worm burden than control BB hens.

Rather than type out a lengthy explanation, you can see where this conversation has already been done, and another study by the SAME SCIENTISTS concluded DE does NOT kill internal parasites in chickens:

http://www.backyardchickens.com/t/546502/study-of-feeding-de-diatomaceous-earth-very-positive#post_7004783

Effect of diatomaceous earth on internal parasites of freerange, organic laying hens.
D. C. Bennett*, Y.-J. Rhee, A. Yee, and K.M. Cheng, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, Canada.
The abstract is presented on page 81 of the 98th Annual Meeting of the Poultry Science Association, July 2009.
link here: http://www.poultryscience.org/psa09/abstracts.pdf

In it they state, "DE had no effect
on the number of hens infected, FEC, or worm burdens
.

However, body
mass and egg production were greater in hens consuming the DE diets.
These hens also laid larger eggs with thicker shells.

The results of this
study suggest that there is no evidence that DE is an effective treatment
  to control gastrointestinal parasitic infections
of free-range laying hens.
