This was like a life long dream, I thought I could tame them.  ...................NO_WAY.
I also thought that quails would keep the aviary cleaner, by eating all the bugs, poop, etc................NO-WAY..But their eggs are yummy...
Then I came home with 2 RIR'S I saw on caigslist, thinking I need chicken eggs, and they are so awesome and sweet, that I bought the babies from the hatchery.
I LOVE THE CHICKENS SO MUCH ..............

THE PICTURES YOU POSTED OF YOURS ARE AWESOME. I wish I lived anywhere else, but here in Fla. It is still so hot and I can't even spend much time out in the aviary......
90 degrees today with 90 percent humidity............I DON'T GET WHY PEOPLE RETIRE TO FLORIDA.........I HATE IT.......WHEN MY KIDS EVER MOVE OUT.......I AM OUTTA HERE..ONE IS 22, ONE IS 18   WNOOO WHOOOO

I wasn't sure. smile I have 21 parakeets none are tame I use to breed them but my allergies are to much. I would love to build an aviary but that's a far shot. I had two quails before the female died from touch egg laying and the male got out.
Here in ny it's getting cold I hate winter! 69 high for today with rain. Low of 57. I hate it here!!

I FREAKING LOVE MY FLOCK and I'm pretty sure we'll be building a bigger coop next summer and adding probably 4 more pullets. Wheeeeeeeeeeeeee! big_smile

My flock!

From left to right:

Spaghetti the barred rock, Godzilla (brown gamey mutt), Megatron (creamy white gamey mutt), Roostroyer (fatty mcfatfat light brahma).

Dust (semi ferall gamey mutt hen we caught in the street), and Rusty (light brown gamey mutt).

I'm pretty sure the mutts are related since they all come from the same street roaming flock of chickens we had here for awhile. Aren't they cute? :3

We have four buff orpingtons. Four is PLENTY! I love my babies, but our yard isn't big enough for more. We let them free range though! And they get a lot of chicken love from their mommas!

I live in El Monte CA, and my town is in the middle of Los Angeles county, as urban as it can be. In the part of my town where I live, however, people are allowed to have horses and there is even a small colony of semiwild peacocks just roaming around (I think they are part of the peacock flock in Arcadia, which are also free to roam everywhere and are protected). A neighbor had chickens that he'd just let roam free in his front yard and street, and we eventually ended up with some of his chickens XD. He finally took most of his flock away with him when he moved. There are a hawk or two that hunt in this area, but besides that, how chickens are safe in our fenced backyard smile.

I only have 8 in my flock, is that small enough? I want more and I probably will have more someday as I am new and love 'em, but 8 is enough for now. wink

I guess I'll chime in too!

I have a small flock of 6 chickens, who up until a few weeks ago, all lived at my house...I have 3 RIRs (2 hens and a roo), 2 silkie mixes, and 1 GL cochin...I got everyone in April of this year (silkies and cochin at a swap, RIRs off craigslist a week or so later...lol)...everyone was fine together at first, then as they started maturing, the RIRs began beating up on everyone else...Thankfully my BF has allowed me to put half of my flock at his house (he even built a coop, to go inside their caged run in his backyard!), so I have the silkies and cochin at his place, with my favorite RIR hen...they go outside of the coop/run in the mornings and are allowed to free-range all day until evening when they are locked up for their safety....The other RIR hen and roo are at my place...the ones at my house free-range during the day in my backyard, and come in during the afternoon / evening and reside in a large dog crate with a nest box...

I'm thinking of adding a few more RIR hens, or maybe some white leghorn or EE hens to my flock at my house, because my roo was very upset I took one of his ladies away...she's one of my favs, and I spend more time at my BF's house than my own, so I wanted her nearby...do you all think it's a bad idea to add a few more young, almost laying age hens to my home flock?   I will eventually have an outside coop for my house for them, but until then, everyone comes in at night...I just feel my roo would be happier if he had more girls to care for...everyone is my flock is btwn 6-7 months of age, and all the hens are now laying as of this week...thoughts?

Hey everybody, I'm not on here much during the week, sorry. Glad to see that this has gotten started! I was having a little picnic in the front yard today and was joined by a Delaware. It was so sweet, I took some pictures, will upload them later.
