Hello all, I have often looked at this site for information but have not joined previously because the answers were always here.
I have a small free range egg business in Victoria, australia. I have 450 Isa Brown Hens, separated into 7 flocks. We just finished a VERY wet winter with mud on the ground for a few months. The mud dried up a few weeks ago as we are now in Spring. About a month ago I notice a hen with a bleeding hole in her foot, I separated her and then found another hen and another hen. They were all from the same flock. I have now found hens that have what looks like mud between their toes, in other flocks. I think this is how the problem starts. the mud-sore then splits or is pecked at and then it bleeds. once it is bleeding the poor hen gets no piece and her foot is pecked to a bloody mess in hours.
I now have 15 hens separated and I am running out of things to make little cages from! Please help!
I have lots of photos of the sores, is there a way I can upload a photo?
