if you have silkie chicks that need to be sexed place pics here. chicks need to be at least 4 weeks old. pics need to be from the sides of the head and full body, front veiw of the head, and any other pics you want to provide please. here are some tips i found online about sexing silkie chicks as well

Look at the feathers on the chick's head. Males tend to have feathers that stand upright and curve towards the back, while the female head feathers tend to form in a rounded feather puff.

Look at the comb when it develops within two to three weeks of the chick's birth. a male will have a larger comb than a female.

Males are significantly larger than females, and this can be obvious a few days after hatching. This isn't considered a certain method of sexing though because you may just have a large female or a small male. It's also a poor method if you are trying to compare chicks from two different genetic lines.

Listen for crowing. The chicks will start losing the fluffly baby feathers around four of five months. At that time a male silkie will start attempting to crow.

Look at the saddle feathers just before the tail and the hackle feathers on the neck. These feathers will be long and sharp on a male and gently rounded on a female.

These are my 7-ish week olds... I'm really not sure about the buff one, i couldn't get a good enough pic, but it's got this lump forming on it's head, and almost no feathers on top, yet it's the same age as the other 2. white one's also a 99% sure roo... but the other 2?

your right about the 1st deffently roo and he is sooo pretty

white one i say is deffently roo to hes got a good sized comb and wattle and hes a lot bigger than the other 2
theres not a good side shoot of the black one but i think its a hen but the way the feathers on its head are curving back that way makes me think roo
yellow one looks hen...she has a very small comb compared to the white one and no wattles on her, lack of head feathers makes her look funny in that cute way. im sure she will get her feathers in soon.
if you go by the size of them then the black and yellow would be hens but then again i dont also trust all info i read

please post more pics as they get older. i'm going by all the research on the breed that i have done. i started this thread to help all silkie owners and am hoping for more replies with pics of their chicks as they grow into adults. that will also help all of us all out but in the mean while thats what they look like to me.

what color is your 1st roo?

Not real sure on any of these... In my Silkies, when they are just over 4 months old... The males get sparse feathering coming from their top knots, while the girls have rounded tops all one length... Check out pics at www.IndigoEgg.US I have LOTS of pictures... I can guess at 2 mo... but it is only a guess... I have stopped wasting my time. At 4 months the top knot will tell for sure... or if it crows sooner!
