Legalizing Chickens in Surrey BC

Hi All,
There is a Facebook page set up "Surrey Backyard Chickens" and a couple of petitions from Care2 and change.org set up and waiting for your signatures! CLUCK Canada has also been kind enough to set up a FB page CLUCK Surrey.
A city council member was encouraging me to ask for "forgiveness rather than permission" but I have a neighbour who will report me immediately and I will have spent a substantial amount of money preparing a clean, safe place for my hens. A dilemma to be sure. Advice?

This challenge is not over by any means. Please get the word out and check out Surrey Backyard Chickens on Facebook. Anyone interested - please e-mail me at [email protected] We can't do this alone!

I once lived in Seattle and when I saw this thread I was curious why Surrey would have a problem with chickens. Of course all I have seen of Surrey is driving 99 to & from Vancouver and that's probably not representative. I don't do Facebook but I wish you well.

Back in the "will the last person leaving Seattle please turn out the lights?" era (1970's) I remember reading all about how chickens were the cheapest way to turn feed into food and I'm pretty sure they allowed up to 4 hens. I doubt that has changed. "Because Seattle does it" might not carry much weight with your city council but you might keep it in mind (after confirming, of course).

You link to a story with a quote about hens not being audible beyond 25 feet. That's true with the cute little purring-kitten clucks they make, but when one of my Leghorns wants the nesting box another chicken is using (ignoring the empty ones) it's a LOT more than 25 feet and it goes on until one of them gives up. Not to be discouraging but it never helps to make an argument that is easily shot down.

Anyway, best of luck. I loved your part of the continent. More chickens would make it even better.

Hope you haven't given up on legalizing chickens in Surrey. A province in France is actually giving their citizens 2 chickens to help reduce the green waste and it also gives the families fresh eggs every day.

We are in south surrey bc and pushing to legalize the birds too. Vancouver city limits has approved chickens so why wouldn't surrey! Our girls never poop in neighbours gardens like cats, never bark all day like dogs or poop on everyone's playgrounds, the don't creat the mess all over the street like the pigeons ( a pigeon coop seems to be fine ) and they are the best natural weed/insect control going! As for rodents, well we had a rat problem long before the chickens, bird feeders, fruit trees, nut trees, backyard gardens just for food, then plenty of shelter. Garden sheds, above ground hut tubs, wood sheds etc... The list goes on. Now that I have birds I've started trapping and so far my neighbourhood is down 10 rodents! BTW have yet to kill a rat in the coop trap. My neighbours love our ladies and even have volunteered to look after them when we go away. They are quiet, productive and fun!
