Hello from Silicon Valley

Hi All,

My family is new to BYC and to raising chickens.  We live in Milpitas, CA which is just north of San Jose and at the South end of the San Francisco Bay.  I've wanted to raise chickens for several years now, but didn't think it was practical in a densely populated suburban area.  How wrong I was.  We finally decided to make the leap when we found a wonderful coop made of old barn wood on a recent visit to the Wine Country.

We now have two - year old Black Stars, one 5 month old Red Star and a 5 month old Wyndotte.  These little girls are the funniest animals I've ever seen and far easier to care for than I ever imagined.  They all get along famously with our 4 cats.

Thanks for this forum.  I look forward to chatting with you.

Cheryl

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome! Yes, dsquawker, the Black Stars are surprisingly large birds and are real characters.  And talk about egg producers, wow!

Welcome to BYC. I love Black Stars, one of my favorites. Barred Rocks are the other.

I have two black stars myself and I swear they are close to eight pounds.  One already laid an egg and I'm waiting for them to mature a bit.  I don't know how much bigger they can get.  Their green, purple, blue, and gold colors are amazing.  I love their feathers.  Mine are suppose to be five months old and laying by now.  I'm hoping the lady I bought them from didn't tell me incorrectly.  What if they are like two years old?  But if you say that yours are young and very big already then I'll relax a little bit longer and be more patient.  It just seems they should be laying a lot more and more often.  What do you think?
