buckeye chickens

I just bought two 3 1/2 month old Buckeyes to add to my small flock! A rooster and a hen for $10. I read such great thing on them, I'm excited to watch them mature.

I got my birds about 4-6 months old from a breeder south of Wilmington Ohio. They are great birds, I have two hens one rooster. Get an average of 1-2 eggs every 3 days. As far as eating them, I have no intention of eating these birds. They have become "fixtures" you could say. They are quite beautiful, specially the rooster. He follows me around like a puppy "talking" to me the whole time. I think if your looking for a pretty good layer, and a kind non-aggressive bird you could not ask for better. My brother has some also, they are from the same flock, picked up the same week. They are still considered "Extremely rare" according to Wikipedia. Not sure if that is the case though.

I have a Buckeye Rooster names Jack. He is awesome. Very sweet, good natured and protects the hens really well without ever being aggressive towards his human family members. He is very large but tolerates being picked up by kids and even tolerates our golden retrievers coming in the pen. I have also had Brahmas and other types of roo's in the past and they all seem to get mean after a year or so. I will certainly have more Buckeyes in the future.

They are great birds, aren't they! See my signature line for the longer thread here on the BYC where there are 4980 messages about Buckeyes!

I am looking for a few of these birds for a grandson as a FFA project
Does anyone have any that are of show quality
This is something that I would be willing to take some one at face value
If I can get some then it could be a real money maker for the seller in the future
if the birds show good . I am not aware of anybody owning any in our area of Texas

I encourage you to post in this thread, where most of the discussion of Buckeyes occurs: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/803253/the-new-buckeye-thread

nd I will private message you with an email of a breeder in TX (the only one I know of who has good quality Buckeyes.) Check your PMs here.

I have never heard of the dinosaur roar from a Buckeye before but two days ago I think I might have heard it. I just thought my chickens were weird. Do the males or the females do this? And is it instead of or along with a crow?

I have raised buckeyes for a few years now. I am not sure what a dinosaur roar sounds like, but I think I know the sound you are referring. Buckeyes are verbal, that is for sure. I think it comes from the game in their makeup. My cornish also make similar sounds. Please join us at the buckeye thread here on byc. It is a fairly active thread where we chat all about buckeyes. We'd love to have you stop by and say hi. Always nice to see and hear about people loving the buckeye breed. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/803253/the-buckeye-thread/3020#post_14262305

Looking for Buckeye eggs in Virginia, if anyone has any that are not hatchery birds I would be interested in buying a dozen or so, from you if you can ship.

Thanks ahead of time, I have some ALBC line and would like some different lines to add to the breed.
