How do chickens show affection for their human flock leader?

I have one hen that will come up and stand on my feet when she wants my attention. I will move and she will come over and do it again until I pick her up and make over her for a bit. I have some that growl and some that scream and some that pay no attention to me unless they think I have treats..

I THINK that my chickens appreciate me, but all of them (but Mei) run away when I try to carry them... The only reason why Sheena follows me down the stairs is because she wants her daily handful of scratch.

A couple of ours really like to snuggle on our laps. Our Big Kahuna will come up to me when I bend down and peer at me closely, then tell me about the day. She circles me and grooms my clothing, but will NOT be petted! Too bad, 'cause she's such a nice armful!

I have two lovely hens who have the complete run of my large rural retreat garden. They are very loving, and will jump on my lap whenever I sit down outside. They get many treats, and their eggs are great! I do believe they are capable of love. I certainly love them. I also think they might have a soul, or astral body. Let me explain: A couple of years ago one of my hens died, rather suddenly. A few nights later my daughter complained of someone pecking at her bedroom window in the middle of the night. This went on for I think 3 nights in a row. It would wake up my daughter, and she would look out the window...but nobody was there. Was this the ghost of my lost and confused hen? Perhaps she never wanted to leave us because she had found Heaven with us. What do you think?

GardenGal. Thanks for telling me about grooming. Now I understand why my girls constantly peck at my leg pants, and my clothes whenever they sit on my lap and wipe their becks on my clothes, and that goes for anyone who comes into the garden with me. Also I have one darling who will not go to the henhouse at twilight unless I carry her! And she doesn't make a fuss when I do. Quite the opposite!

I think its comforting to believe that, but I am skeptical.. Since you asked.
