I've heard about solar powered electrical fences and invisible fences that are buried underground. I haven't tried either of these ... yet ... but am just starting to look into them.

Thanks chick-a-dee. This morning is kinda blue again. I was out in the yard with my dog yesterday and just seeing him made the chickens very afraid. I felt so bad. Honestly, I saw him from their perspective and he looked so evil! Like the worst predator. But then when we were inside he was all lovey dovey and sweet again. The prey drive is strong in him.

Overthehenhouse, I bought the Petsafe Pawz Away Outdoor Barrier, which is a wireless deterrent. I will post how it works out when we start using it. Here it is: http://www.amazon.com/Pawz-Away-Dogs-Outdoor-Barrier/dp/B002GQDUBW

I
HATE to put this collar on my little dogs, especially the one who didn't do anything. But I feel it is one of only a few options. Today we start with more training, although in order to do it he has to be near the chickens and they get so scared. Such a dilemma. I truly hope this thread helps others to avoid this situation.

Thanks for the info on Pawz Away! I knew there had to be a product like this - I'll be interested to know how your guys do with it.

Its a good thing to see life from your pets eyes. AND an even better thing to be a responsible pet owner, getting the collars for your dogs.

You may have to observe the dogs to make sure the collars work first....you wouldnt want to have a defective one. Hope all goes well with the pooch training.

I think Ive made a rod for my back now

. When I put the rooster in the run he crows for me to take him out...LOL AND as Im in a suburban setting, I cant have him crowing too long!!

I have a little space for him inside the house & he LOVES it there. Hes quiet, & if I leave the room he clucks loudly. Hes lucky hes so cute!! At least the neighbours wont be complaining. And hopefully Im not doing him a diservice either. Im hoping that once the hens are old enough to go into the big coop, he will be distracted

So sorry for your loss. It sounds like you're doing everything you can to work out a good solution in the future. I wish you the best with getting your pup retrained.

Thanks again to everyone for the kind words. Today my little dog went towards the chicken fence, and I called him back. He stopped and reluctantly came to me. He is super bummed about the new rules but they are becoming clear to him. Wish me luck!

Hello,

Last week over here on the other side of the world (France) we've recently had the same problem as you've had with your Shih Tzu. Ours attacked our beloved chickens (we had 8) and 4 of them were far too badly injured to be saved and had to be put down. It was a shock for us and for the children and the situation was worse because like you, we love our dog and also love our chickens.

This animal drama made us think hard about the dog, about the chickens, and about our own responsibilities in relation to what happened. As cute, lovely and affectionate as they can be as pets, Shih Tzus are obviously not named "Tibetan Lion Dogs" without a reason. It indicates what their instincts can reveal themselves to be if they're exposed to a situation that will bring out those instincts and it seems that for some Shih Tzus chickens or other fowl do just that.

Our other dog, a mixed breed of labrador and doberman, seems to have perfectly understood that the chickens are part of our "clan". Since we got her 3 years ago she sometimes enters the chicken run with us (hoping to catch a rat) and totally ignores the chickens.

Our mistake was not realising how important it is when keeping chickens, to look more closely into the background history of certain breeds of dog. It would not have stopped us from having our Shih Tzu who we love, but it would certainly have made us much more aware of how necessary it was to create a chicken run that was totally secure from a little dog with an unsuspected killler instinct.

Hoping this can be of help to others - dedicated to Rosalie, Blanche, Nosey and Zena, the chickens we unfortunately lost.
