This morning I go to let the chickens out at about 6:30 AM and my golden comet hen was laying in the nest box making a loud crying/whining sound and I thought she might just be laying an egg. But later when I came home around 3:00 PM she was walking around the yard still making the same sound. Her egg was already laid when I came home. She looks like she is in perfect condition and her egg looks normal. I just never heard her make this sound before and I am worried. She is about 7 Months old and has been laying for about 1.5 months. There was no storm or anything that might of scared her. Please help I don't know what is going on.

My Black Sexlink does the same thing. It's almost like she's fussing about something. She does really bad before she lays. Then when she's done it the same thing. But I never hear the cackling after any of them lay. Not one.

If I look in the box when one particular hen is in there laying, she will cry/scream at me. Open beak, scream. I have heard her do this out in the yard too, it is possible that your hen, like my hen, she is cranky!

Well I figured out why she was crying. There was a tick on her head! Once I pulled it out she stopped a little after.
