The Smell...THE SMELL!!

For a good poop board, I stumbled upon four "boot trays" that I purchased from Lowes to set my plants in on my back porch over the winter. The trays are about 3 ft long by about 14 inches wide. I put two under the roosts each morning, and then swap them out and rinse them the next morning. It only takes a few seconds under the water hose to rinse them off. You can find them down the aisle with the plastic floor matting that is on big rolls, by the rug aisle.

I forgot to add that the boot tray has about 1 inch sides that will hold some sand or PDZ.

Good luck.

Does anyone know if using lime in a coop/run will hurt the chickens?  I know it will control the smell but I don't want to hurt the flock either.  Thanks

I was wondering the same thing myself. My coop itself just smells mild. The run where it has rained recently...omg...horrible.

I have 13 chicks about about 6 weeks old in a 4' x 8' coop. There is no run yet, so the chicks stay in the coop 24/7, and I use about 2" of pine shavings on the floor. Odor seems to be negligible unless the pine shavings get wet. Then, it's awful. I have to change out all the litter to eliminate the odor.

I would never consider using one, or for that matter, any "air freshener" that adds a scent to mask the underlying scent. I have asthma, and know that birds have very sensitive lungs. Any thing that bothers me would not be allowed near my flock.

Has anyone even ever used a wall plug in freshner and is it OK to use
Have not and would not. As LG said, they have sensitive lungs. Let's face it - chickens poop and poop doesn't smell good. How you manage it will make a big difference. Keep the coop and run as dry as possible. Wet chicken litter has its own "special" smell in my opinion. Clean or add litter for deep litter as frequently as necessary. Maybe scoop out the chunks if you can. Give them more room, if possible. The poop won't be as concentrated that way.

If it realy isn't dirty, but just an owner's sensitive nose, use an old autopsy trick. Wipe a smear of vicks vapo rub under your nose. I promise it will be all you smell while in the coop.

I think I probably just have a sensitive nose.  I only have 8 hens that are kept in a 12 x 12 coop with an outside run the same size.  We just built the coop/run when we got the hens as baby chicks back in March so it is not an old environment.  It has a sand floor that I use a kitty litter scoop on twice a day.  Plus it has a fan in the coop that I am still running since I am in Texas and we havnt had cold temps yet.  Plus the humidity is up slightly.  I just love my chickens,.....But that smell gets in my head and stays even after I have left the coop.

Any secrets to improving the smell in the coop?

I use all purpose sand with sweet PDZ under the roots on a poop board. I have been using pine in the coop but for my fall cleaning this week I will switch to sand androids for the coop bedding. Smell is minimal.
