Hi All,

Quick question, we have 8 hens, all around 18-25 weeks old. 3 RIR, 1 Barred, 1 EE, 1 Leghorn and 2 Silkies.

Anyway, no eggs as of yet! Our chickens are allowed to roam our yard all day long, which is large and has lots of hiding spaces. I pretty much know their hangout spots. Just wondering if they lay an egg in a place other than the coop will they sit on the egg for any extended period of time? I am asking because when I go out to see them in the backyard, they all come running because I usually have treats for them. ANd if one is missing and sitting on an egg I will notice.

I have noticed slight behavior change in some hens, so I thought an egg was coming soon but I have yet to find any.

Thanx in advance.

I doubt if they would sit on an egg very long after laying it. Maybe just to rest for 20 minutes or so. Do they have nest boxes in their coop? Have you seen them nosing around the nest boxes? Got some golf balls in the nest boxes? What kind of changes in behavior have you seen? Watch for: Reddening of comb and wattles. Friendlier behavior. Nosing around the nest boxes. Squatting (a sign of sexual maturity, leading to egg laying.)

The barred rock comb/waddle has turn beet red. She also is a little less energetic and a bit more shy.

I have four nesting boxes, but one is slept in by a large rir with a leg issue that prevents her from jumping to the roosting bar.

I have placed golf balls in the boxes, i do notice that the balls have been moved when I check on them in the morning.

So I guess I better keep looking for eggs throughout my yard which it tough because they love hanging out under my deck!

Good luck, those hens can stuff themselves into the darnedest places to hide eggs! I have found them all over my yard, under the sand and water table, on the steps to the basement, even found a bunch in the holes on the top of a cinder block wall! They are creative little stinkers!
