sick then dead baby quail...

ive had these quail for like 2 weeks now and ive already lost 3 and now 2 more are sick. I dont know what i am doing wrong, they are healthy otherwise...I change their bedding everyday, they are warm, they always have food and water. They are not exposed to anything outside. Help?

First make sure you are doing everything right....At 2 weeks the temp in the brooder should be in the low 90's, or upper 80's. There should be plenty of space for them to not pick on each other. I would also advise, on the space subject, to use a red lamp instead of a white lamp as white will make them excitable. Along these same lines, make sure they have places to get out of the heat in case they do get warm. Are they on a good gamebird food of at least 28% protein? Plain water in the water font. The waterer is placed up and out of the way of poop. Dry around the waterer. Same with the feeder, away from the poop. Is the top of the brooder high enough they are not "boinking" their heads if they fly up? Keeping the bedding dry and clean...I may be forgetting something here...

So what does the poop look like? Normal, runny, bloody? Are all of them getting food or are some of the quail guarding the feeders? Same with the waterer? Do they appear to be breathing ok? Did you hatch these yourself? Check them for external bugs and then add a box of sand or dirt for bathing. If they do have bugs, you may need to dust them with Sevin powder.

Watch them closely for signs of illness, or possibly they are picking at each other enough to kill each other....What type of quail are we talking about here?

I'm sorry to hear your still having trouble.

Did you get them switched to a GBS and into a bigger brooder?

ok as far as space, i switched to 2 of the 10 gallon aquariums. They are actually 3 weeks old b/c we got them when they were a week old. Where can i get a red lamp? Or can it just be a red bulb from walmart or TSC?? The bedding stays dry seeing as i change it every 24 hours. They are Coturnix Quail, Pharoah and Italian. The bulb is at one end and they can run to the other side if they get too hot. The ones that are sick dont seem to be breathing right and their wings are droopy and feathers are puffed out. They are on GBS now and seemed to be doing better for a day then 2 came up sick today I did not hatch them myself but the person we got them from doesnt seem to have any problems with his chickens or turkeys or quail. We have traded off with him several times with no problem. Their poop is sometimes hard and sometimes runny but no blood. Oh and No bugs

First off, 10-gal. fish tanks are way to small for all except the tiniest of babies. Even though you've only got the light on the end, you have to remember they are in a glass box. The heat does not escape like you'd think. If they are in the house, take the light away completely. They are plenty big enough to not need it. The breathing problem sounds like they are panting from being too hot.

X2 on the 10 gallon tank. That is way to small a space for heat. Sounds like they are over heating and dying. Get your self a large box or even a large storage bin from Walmart and depending on how many you have, you may need to divide them up for space. Use a thermometer so you know it isn't getting too hot or cold in the brooder. Allow them places to escape heat or to get under it if they need it. Sorry you lost some of your babies.

You can use a sterilite container



Cutting the lid and putting the hardware cloth for air. And then the lamp can go over.

Just a thought.

But remember, if they are inside they don't need a heat light at 3 weeks old. I usually take the light away from mine by 2 weeks if they are inside.
