I just got a barred rock pullet chick and an ameraucana pullet chick. I cannot have a rooster or any loud noisy chickens because my neighboors will complain and I will have to get rid of my chickens. Will these hens be noisy? I've heared that the barred rocks can be very loud and noisy when they are about to lay an egg and I cant have that.

it really depends on the individual birds. I can tell you that most hens I've had can be pretty loud when singing their egg song.

are chickens legal to own in your area? If so, then the neighbors can't make you get rid of them. Noise ordinances take into account the fact that animals will make some amount of noise. Chickens aren't loud at night when noise laws are strictest. Roosters will crow at night if disturbed by a light.

They are not legal to my area even though the town next to me is legal for chickens. There are people currently trying to make them legal though. When they sing is it really frequent and could it pass as an ordinary bird or does it sound like a crowing chicken.

I have 7 red Sussex,all beautiful,but then I'm, biased.

I got buff orpingtons for just that reason - they are soooo mellow & quiet. I love them.

Will they sing such a loud egg song when they start laying? It's hard to imagine them doing that - they are so quiet now...

my neighbor 4 houses down, opposite side of the highway, can hear my birds' egg song when his windows are open. He said he hears them better than the crow of the rooster.

ETA: I have easter eggers

My EE hens make a racket that rivals the neighborhood roosters when they're about to lay an egg! But- that only lasts a few minutes, and then they're quiet for the rest of the day.

Would it help to take the neighbors some fresh eggs (when they're available) and ask them to let you know if the chickens are making too much noise?

oh boy. this could be a problem. I guess I will ask the guy who runs the hatchery what his ameraucana and barred rock hens sound like. Thanks for the replies everyone!

I have 2 barred rock and 2 RIR. The rhodies are somewhat loud but the barred rocks seem to be pretty melow. My 4 are pullets, no roo's.
