Weird ? - what would make a package of sausage blow up?

We normally buy all our meat from a local grass fed/range fed farmer.  Last time we purchased meat from them they were out of pork breakfast sausage, so I bought a roll of Jimmy Dean sausage at the grocery store. 


The package had an expiration date of 10/11.  About four days before that date I decided we wouldn't be using it by then, so I froze it.  A couple days later I noticed that the package was getting larger, had alot of air in it.  Now it's still frozen solid, but getting bigger all the time. 


I don't trust it and want to toss it out, but DH is very frugal and doesn't like to waste food.  It's the weirdest thing I
 
I had Tennessee Pride split in the middle and thought my son was jerking me around when he said they explode. Nevertheless, I tossed it and will apologize to him!
